Welcome to BE DB - great first post!

Re the Oyster style cards. Brisbane has one although it took years longer than expected. Melbourne has all the bits in place but just seems scared to switch it on!

Sydney on the other hand abandoned its attempt a while back saying it was just too hard - so you're out of luck there!

I don't understand how it can be so hard when these things have already been successfully implemented all over the world!??

All in all, we are approaching this with an open mind, and I think on reflection in 5-10 years time we will look back having made the right decision for our family. Hopefully, we may convince some of my partners family to make the move as well once we are settled in.

Excellent post. Pretty well balanced and good to have an Aussie slant on things (Vash is ok but he needs more backup )

Welcome to BE.

Yes - great post. Good research. In addition it might be worth you speaking to Aussies who have lived in the UK for many years then returned to live in Oz. It can often take many months to adjust back into the norm.

Thanks guys

I've kept in touch with quite a few Aussies who have returned to Oz. The main things they seem to say (again with a London bias) are:

- Things are alot slower (Isn't that a good thing??)
- The locals (i.e other Aussies) don't seem to care that you have been all over the world and experienced new things (which is sad)
- Holiday entitlements in Oz are smaller than in the UK. It typically is 20 days a year compared to 25 in the UK. However, Australia has more public holidays to make up for that (like Australia Day, Anzac Day and the Queens Birthday).

The other thing I forgot to mention in my previous post was travel. I've found the return trip to the UK to be the worst part and would thoroughly recommend splitting up the trip (there or back) with a 3-4 days stopover in the likes of Singapore or Hong Kong. That way it should be easier to adjust to the time difference and overcome the jet lag.

We are also open to the fact that travel outside of Australia on holiday (except coming back to the UK every 2 or so years) will be rare and expensive when compared to living in London and doing weekend trips to Europe.

Having said that though we fully intend to do some of the following in our life:

- Drive the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne to Adelaide
- Go to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup, Comedy Festival or F1 Grand Prix
- Go up to the Great Barrier Reef to go diving
- Go bushwalking in Tasmania
- Go on a skiing holiday to New Zealand
- Go to Fiji, Vanuatu or Tonga

So Australia does have some great holiday options.

I've been unable to figure out in my years in the UK how in the world Australia honour the Queen's birthday and they don't in the UK. It's mind boggling.

Civil servants get a day off. But yes, we should all have a day off and celebrate.

UK and Oz both have same standard full time holiday leave of 20 days, anything more is a bonus. Aussies are actually more travelled on average than Brits, they're not all insular bogans!

Plenty of weekend trips to Bali, Singapore, KL on West Coast, or NZ, Fiji on East Coast, much rather go to tropical paradise than cold rainy Europe

Australia like anywhere else is what you make of it!

Most Aussies I know go o'seas almost every year. Brits don't travel as much.

We all know that a UK trip to Europe is not always overseas, if you use the tunnel, it is 'under'seas....

And by the same token... a trip to Tasmania is overseas...

Well...it depends...is all I can say. It's not true to say that Aussies don't travel though. Most I know are perpetually planning the next trip and when they do it they tend to make a go of it - for obvious reasons. S America, Asia, Europe - the biggies.

If you discount Brit city breaks and Spain, and proximity to Europe, all of a sudden, it does even out a bit more.

You old miserable git you. You've obviously never met the people I know then.

All I am saying is that it is not true to say Australians do not travel overseas and that all things considered, Australians are probably well represented when you take the distance in to account.

And, I think it is good that they do travel in their own country too.
