the things that I like
being a firie..I've passed my minimum skills and can now attend turnouts (or "jobs"), although there is a lot to learn. Most of them are RTAs on the roads where we live.
It's not all glamorous being a firie; you have to cop it when your neighbours make comments like "is that smoke I see over there" or "you've got your box of matches, haven't you?". It is also a well known fact that the CFA are the biggest gossips going.
A few days ago, I was at the stn with some young blokes and the captain, and some backpackers turned up who had broken down. As my vehicle was at home, the captain lent me one of the fire vehicles to give them a lift. I felt great driving the vehicles, even if I am just filling them up, or taking them for a drive. Service and all that. (I'll never forget the first day I was asked to move the Cruiser ute forward at the servo. Move the Cruiser ute forward!!! I was like 'You beauty!" Then I leant casually out the window, at least I hoped it looked casual, my heart was all arace, and saw Hev and HUP's kids waving at me from their car at the other fill point. Small world. Getting out wasn't so good on account I had the oldest uniform they could find this side of NSW - think YMCA/boiler suit-size too small. But now I've got myself a real ripper of a suit with all the bells and whistles and reflective whatnots.)
On the other, hand, the euthoria is shortlived when asked to back a vehicle in to the stn. Phew. You need all the concentration you can muster and nerves of steel to finish between the lines AND with only one corrective move forward. And that's just with the ute LOL)
It's times like that, I love living in Australia. Those backpackers can go home remembering how helpful the firefighters in our community were.
Not feeling very Christmassy, but this is because living where we live, there is not much exposure to commercialism; guess what, most people would knock that anyhow; it's the first thing about Xmas, sorry Christmas, that people hate. Christmas is about Christmas Day, and as we're all sorted for that, we'll be right.
Yours aye,
BM
PS Post edited for extra endearing comments in a cheap ploy for Karma.
