Default Things to do on the Gold Coast/ Clubs!??

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on things to do on the Gold Coast?

We are moving out there hopefully after xmas and want to go out there and join a couple of clubs or something to keep us busy and help us get settled in! By clubs I dont mean knitting or local choir club ( no offence to those of you who participate ),
I was thinking of diving club or something for hubby ( a local thing rather than touristy one), god knows for me (Wine?! ), brownies for our daughter?? Do they even have brownies, is there a long waiting list? ( she has been out a waiting list here for over a year to get in!), we are open to suggestions really...

Hi Donna

There is all types of clubs and activities here, loads of surf clubs and boating clubs, we joined the sharks as a family, my kids are in the junior sharks, which means they get to go to movie nights and discos, the Southport Sharks is a footi team on the Gold Coast, the club is really nice, excellent cheap food and good atmosphere and the kids are allowed in any night to any time , so it's nice to get out at the weekend as a family and still have a couple of wines, without having to find babysitters which is really hard when you don't know many people. They do have the brownies here, and also the guides, if you need things for the kids to do they will never be stuck although most things involve sports, girls and boys soccer clubs, gymnastics, dancing, swimming, baseball, basketball. There is so much to choose from.

There is always something on at the weekend on the coast, every weekend, and almost always free of charge, shows, parades, movies on the beach, firework nights, food tasting, the list goes on.

Thanks Claire

I've just checked out the Sharks website and it's just the sort of family type place we were looking for.

I think the Southport/Ashmore surburbs will be the right location for us as much as I can tell from the internet. As long as we can find a good school for my son (10 yrs) then that will be the area we will concentrate on, if and when we sell the house and get the visa!

Well in the Ashmore Area the 2 schools I know about are the 2 my brother went to & the 2 my kids will hopefully be going to also...... Ashmore State for primary & then Trinity Lutheran College for secondary/HSC....

http://www.ashmoress.qld.edu.au/
http://www.tlc.qld.edu.au

Trinity is a Christian School but nothing is forced down the kids throats. they have to go to chapel once a week but thats it really. I went ot a CofE Convent school in the UK and loved every minute of it..... even though my family are not particularly religious.

A couple of websites to rec'd for you to check out schools are

Hi there future ashmore buddies!

I've just had a look on the sharks website, it looks great, like the a team says, just what we are looking for, any ideas if you can you take babies too??

Lucy, our daughter is into swimming so thinking of a swimming club for her- the right country for it I think!

Throughout the whole process I've been pretty laid back and patient, now getting very inpatient and want to be there, and reading your email Lisa makes me worse! Thought our house would sell straight away (its been on 6 weeks), move into rented and be ready for the off in Jan, but if we dont sell by xmas may have to fly out and activate the visas

I see no mention of a wine club, maybe we could start our own??!! First 4 members, me, Claire, Lisa and A Team ....

Thanks for the info Claire. Other people have also recommended Trinity so I'm going to investigate this school further. Until we have jobs sorted it's so hard to choose our preferred location but it certainly helps to narrow down the search area.

Any other information on the Southport or Ashmore areas would be much appreciated. We'll have to be a one car family I expect, so does it have good public transport links as it will most likely be me catching the bus!!

Any areas we should avoid?
