The problem with a large number of people that come here is they want to recreate what they had in the UK. i.e
They want Corrie then Eastenders,
They want their twice weekly dose of Ant and Dec.
They want the 'right' sort of chocolate.
They want Bovril
They want Smiths cheese and onion crisps
They want 'their' washing powder
They want gravy
They want their local chinese takeaway
They want Greggs meat pies
They want fish and chips
They want Hellmans mayonaise
They want Mr Kiplings .........
They want Heinz tomato soup.
They want Kendal mintcake
They want their mates
They want Walls sausages
They want British banks with their no fee accounts
They want kebabs
They want aniseed balls and gobstoppers
They want black puddings
They want fresh cream cakes (we dont get many shops that sell them here)
They want the Manchester Evening News
They want Terry Wogan
They want Marmite
They want Pot Noodles
They want Monster Munch
They want Eccles cakes
They want Horlicks
They want kippers
and the list goes on and on and on.....................

What they shold be doing is what we did and many others do, throw themselves into the Australian way of life, get down to the parks (they are quite literally everywhere) and the beach, take a picnic, meet new people (even if they arent from your home town ) and just get on with it. If you sit moping in your rental about everything you have left behind, then you will only have bad things to say, if you get out there and get on with life, you will only have good things to say.

Australia is a fantastic place, we have been here well over two years now, so please dont accuse me of 'rose tinted spectacles syndrome'. There are negatives about the place, but they are far outweighed by the positives.
I agree - the thing is that alot of the complaining NOT related to REAL stuff is often in the mind of the poster, because I've thought about it and considered it too but have dealt with it accordingly. A lot of people seem to think that because you don't often bother with negatives you must be overly postive. I remember sitting my wife down 3 years ago and warning her about the negatives, and I often temper visitors' reactions with the same. But I can't be arsed to be negative on a website - life is too short. 'Attitude', if I can call it that, really!

People don't mind the negative stuff over the big (and real) stuff, its when you feel you're dealing with a person who just can't cut it that you wonder a bit. The boy who cried wolf...

Hey Paul,

How you finding Adelaide and where abouts are you. You can PM if you don't want to put it here

We got here on the 7th and I knew as soon as I got out of the airport that I was "home"

We've managed to get a nice rental in Mawson Lakes for $280 a week and have the kids in school (they are loving it here, what about your kids?)

I really hope you and your family are well. Look forward to hearing from you

I agree with you there, life always has it irritants, but I find it hard to be patient with people who moan for the sake of it over incredibly petty stuff. When I know people who have had severe hardships in their lives, like have had their whole family killed, and lost their home and they get on with in putting their lives together, I don't have time for those who winge about, TV, their favourite food etc, or those who fall out with people over petty stuff either, I feel like shaking them. Most countries I been to, you adapt to it, and I can honestly say there isn't much I miss from country to country, that I can't find a substitute in.

Know what you mean - I find my interests are kind of portable. I find I could give up my English rugby quite happily and substitute the Tri-Nations in its place...I just like the company of people in a good setting.

All the infrastructure issues is a bit like switching language if you're bi-lingual - like my wife who thinks in English, speaks English but speaks another language to my daughter (her native language). Its the same with food, or joining the post office queue, learn the different dialect.

That's the thing; the Aussie version IS often just a different dialect, its often not so different after all, eg taxation systems are quite similar, the culture is more similar than many countries I could name. Actually, Australia is piss-easy to get to know the rules. It's really not so bad after all...now I admit to being confused in Latin America - now that is different...

This post is so true.

I think peoples chances of settling lie very much in their reasons for coming here, i don't mean "the weather, lifestyle or we're doing it for the kids" these are all ambiguous reasons (ok not the weather). What i mean are real reasons, do you want to come here so you can live a more relaxed life, even if that means working more hours for less money? are you coming here to raise your children in a more outdoor sports orientated lifestyle in the hope it will lead to a happier healthier life for them, even if it means their education being different from what they are currently used to?

Australia has loads to offer but you have to carefully weigh up what you want and consider what you will have to sacrafice or trade in order to get it. I also think that some people find it hard to settle as they expect to be at the same place in life as they were before they came here, for most you're not, you have to start out again and prove yourself.... maybe go back 10 years but keep the wrinkles and the spare tyre, so you are building your life like someone 10 years your junior but don't have youth on your side.

If you come here for the right reasons and with the right mindset you can have a fantastic life

Doesnt matter if you like the place - as long as you like the man that comes with the place ! Once the place is more important than the man, you know you have problems.

I came here to be nearer my son and his wife. Gave up a great circle of friends (and some really bad weather) but gained a super social life here.

It was a big sacrifice at the beginning but have made new friends (not the same as my old friends circle - but still good) and have got a good job, plus get to spend time with son which is something we havent done in years due to him gallavanting round the world. Australia is the first country I could see me moving too and its been a success from my persepective.

I think it all comes down to expectations. Mine were low (spend time with son) and consequently I have been pleasantly surprised by the country itself!

Please don't have a go at the people already here, yes we have made the move, thought and looked to a certain extent through rose tinted glasses that going to Australia was going to be some sort of huge life changing expedition.
I remember being on the UK side wondering myself why so many negative posts about AU and now I know why.
Coming here does not suddenly make everything in life fine and rosey, the weather may be different and the people talk a little differently but at the end of the day its very similar. Hubby mentioned the other day how we seem to be doing just the same as in the UK but in a more pleasent place, which I guess is true, we are both working 6 days a week, have a mortgage and similar way of life we had in the UK.
It was not a huge change for us, we thought it would be and its not, we prefer being here though and the longer we are here the more we feel less inclined to return to the UK, plus its so expensive for us to do it (aussie dollars don't go far!)
I think and tis is a strange thing to admit, having left all family behind has been a good thing, mine where pretty high maintenance and insisted on regular visits and wrecking xmas morning and I love it now getting up xmas morning and doing our own thing, a bit selfish I know but true. Another point to reinforce this, I try my hardest to make sure they all get a xmas present, not just a card but a big box sent out for them xmas day, costs us a fair bit but well we look at it as the done sort of thing, what do we get back every birthday and xmas sodding money stuffed in a card! I don't know why they bother, they moan about postage and theres me posting 3 kilo boxes across the world to keep them happy. We quickly learned family left behind don't pick up phones and can't be bothered sending presents out, so I am dredding going back on holiday. The lazy lot would have us waste a week going round all their houses, because they are too lazy.

OOOPs me going off on one I know but its true, just see how many cards with money you suddenly start getting!

I love my life here, grass was not as green as expected over the wall so to speak but I don't care. I am waiting for spring to arrive and the shorts to come back out and the pool to warm up and then I will be in eutopia!
