THANK YOU AUSTRALIA

Re: THANK YOU AUSTRALIA
Thank you for the weather, the opportunity to practice some real barbie skills, the clean skins at 5 bucks a bottle, the job opportunities, the politeness of people on the street, the almost unbelievable lack of swearing on the streets as a rule, the friendliness of all, the universal catering for children, and most of all, the outdoors lifestyle.....!

Re: THANK YOU AUSTRALIA
I frequent both the Australian and Middle East sections of this forum. What I find strange is that The british seem to hate Australia, yet love Dubai. They complain about racism in Australia, yet they come here in droves and get themselves a poor little servant from the sub-continent to treat like sh*t. The price of property here is extortionate, yet the company pays for it, so therefore it's acceptable and makes them feel very self-important. They're being made redundant in droves, yet they're fighting tooth and nail to stay here. They love the weather because the sun shines all the time (through a thick cloud of dust and pollution). But hey, the shopping malls are better than Australia and after all that's all that counts isn't it.
Australia has so much to offer for quality of life and yet people constantly feel the need to whine about it.

On the other hand, British people who move to Dubai find themselves, almost without exception, living an "expatriate" lifestyle, and no matter how long they stay there they expect continue to live in that way. This is no doubt part of its attraction for some people — a certain sense of unreality allied with great physical comforts and (when in employment) plenty of money and limited ways of spending it.
These sorts of sentiments are not unusual and are not confined to British people. It's also worth remembering that many, probably most, of the British people who move to Australia with the intention of settling do find themselves happy there, "teething troubles" and the inevitable irritations of living in a new country notwithstanding.

Interesting point. But I think you see this sort of thing a lot. In the comparison of Australia with Dubai, it's worth noting that most British people who move to Australia see it (potentially, at least) as a place for them to live in a settled way and a place where they could continue and develop their lives. Even for those who are never planning to settle in Australia, it is nevertheless culturally similar enough to the UK for comparisons to be easily drawn.

Also, the types that go to Dubai and Australia are different I guess, with some overlap ofcourse. In Dubai, its mostly white collar execs and in Australia, its mixed bag of Brits but dominated by tradies.
