How do you go about getting a tax file no.?
Is it something you have to apply and wait for, or get staightaway.

You need to be in Australia to apply, I tried applying for my husband who is still in the UK and the computer said no.

You have to be in Australia to apply for a TFN. It take about 2 weeks to be sent out after you have applied. You can still work without one as long as you have an application lodged.

You will be able to apply online literally as soon as you arrive. When our daughter arrived we applied within half an hour of her arriving and it went through.
