We are now living in a sleepy place called Magra, it's 5 minutes away from New Norfolk and have acreage, most properties in the area have acreage. It is roughly about 50 minutes to Hobart from here. In my opinion the Derwent Valley is breathtaking, we are very happy here, the people are just soooo friendly. I have found that country areas always seem to be that bit more friendlier. There are no keep up with the Jones's around here, just peeps getting on and enjoying there lives, the way it should be.

Depends what you want, You can live 10-15 mins drive out of town and be in the middle of nowhere with land. Or can live 10-15 mins walk to town and have a nice house in West Launceston.

anyhoo we intended living in Hobart prior to moving here. all I can say is we were told before we arrived that Moonah is a dump, reckon anywhere close to a city with reasonable rents arent going to be that good an area.

Only managed to stick Hobart for 5 days we hated it, Sandy Bay looks nice though also looks very built up, looking into peoples bedrooms/backyards. yep rents are riddiculus Hobart thinks its on a par to Melbourne :lol: it certainly isnt.

Bellerive looks nice but some places around look dodgy ie claremont, mornington the prison is in Risdon.

launceston some lovely houses in Travallyen but if your car broke down hell of a hill to climb. If you like leggo land styles then Blackstone Heights is nice and close to the casino/golf course. Some nice areas out of town Evendale is lovely, rural places like Relbia into the wine regions some great houses, up the tamar river to Rosevears, gravelley beach and surrounds are lovely some believe the pulp mill will affect the river?

it really depends on how quiet you want it

So this is just my opinion:

Moonah, along with most of the Northern subs would not be my choice, a bit grotty in places. Saying that there are some lovespots in North Hobart.

Bridgewater, Risdon, Berriedale etc on the upper eastern shore, not great reputation!

Bellerive, Howrah, Tranmere and Lindisfarne - all have nice spots, handy for the city too

Kingston - reasonable facilities, expanding rapidly, nice beach, along with Blackmans Bay which it joins into. Good choice of schools too.

Going further down the channel, we live at Margate, which I think it quite nice, only about 20 mins or so into Hoabrt but far enough out to feel a bit more rural, beyond us are some lovely places, Conningham, Kettering etc.

The Huon Valley is pretty, a bit more green than many places, with Huonville being the main town and then getting smaller and quieter as you go down south.

It really depends on what you want, acreage or town, (or a bit of both which is perfectly possible here) Will you have a car, ideally one each here as we only have the one and find it hard juggling with us both working and 2 children. Public transport is not so good in this direction, probably better the nearer you are to the city.

There are nice roads and not so nice roads in every suburb, are you in SA right now, if you are, I'd definitely suggest you comeover and look around. Generally speaking people move to Tas from interstate and further, for the lifestyle, the scenery, the wildlife, the (relative) lack of people, they don't tend to come here for the nightlife or shopping ;)

Feel free to ask away, there are others on here who live in different parts of Tas, and we're all bound to have varying opinions of the areas we live in.

PS Don't really know about the rents for Sydney or Melbourne but we had no problems finding a really nice, almost new house, 4 beds, in Blackman's Bay with wonderful views over the sea, for $400 per week. If we had gone down to 3 beds and a bit cheaper, there was more competition as there were more popular but still a reasonable choice I think. We did look at some horrors though, so watch out!

Gary & Possum - we did go to agfest yesterday too... if you saw an 18mth old going feral around 3pm and not wanting to sit in her stroller or hold mums hand, that was us! We didnt stay too long due to that but loved the weather. Did love the sign by some of the cows 'please dont pat us, we have had enough!' My little girl did pet the calf though, which she loved.

Would love to arrange a catch up with the other 'northerners' if anyone is up for it?
