My family and I are moving to Tasmania, Australia in July 2004. We have decided on around Hobart.
Does anyone have any useful information for us, anything appreciated.
Thanks Chris

Hi Chris
Welcome to the Forum. I am sorry but I do not know anything about Tas, but I am sure that someone else will be able to help you.
Good luck.

Tasmania has the cleanist and best quality air in the world.
Apparantly they sell bottles of it to the Japanese.

The only thing I can advise is to check out the job prospects for your profession before going there due to the unemployment levels.

I stayed with a mate who is a catholic boys school teacher in Hobart. I met loads of teachers from that school and Friends school (thats the Quaker one). They all said that Hobart is a melting pot of 'social classes'....because the community is smaller everyone mixes with everyone else and once you are established it's actually quite a social place.
I heard unemployment was a prob...but when i was there about 2 years ago the govmnt were offering tax credits to people willing to start a fmaily there.
On another note I found it to be one of the most beautiful cities in Oz and the people were very chilled. Low temp though adn cold winters.
Still - very old buildings compared to rest of country and a bit of history.....
My grandpa came from Hobart. No jokes about two heads please.

Hobart is really lovely,it is more like a large country town, rather than a city.
While I was there I checked out the employment situation, found it lacking for choice, but if you already have employment to go to,then it would not be a problem.
Houses are cheaper there than in most parts of OZ.
If you can afford to buy in Hobart, try Sandy Bay or Battery Point,I noticed on the realestate board that there are a few Bed and Breakfasts for sale, the views over these two suburbs are really breathtaking.
Good luck with your move.
p.s.don't go to New Norfolk, not the best place for work.

Thanks for all the information, as we are moving over there to live in July 04 I should imagine there will be a few places available to rent until we can find a suitable house to buy. As it's winter we shouldn't have to much of a problem.
On the job front basically we shouldn't have to much of a problem, we only need a small income and we are pretty much prepared to do anything really, jack of all trades masters of none so they say.
Anyway can't wait, our daughter is 11 now so finding her a school will be one of our priorities once we arrive.
thanks again for all the help

My husband and I are also planning a move to Tasmania- we are looking at suburbs around Hobart.
Sandy Bay and Battery Point are pretty pricey but still cheap compared with the rest of Oz. We are looking at Taroona- 4km from Hobart, Kingston- 6 km and Blackmans Bay- 13km
best places to look for property is the real estate pages of the mercury newspaper
www.themercury.com.au
also www.property.com.au
We are staying with my sister to start with and then hope to buy straight away as there seems to be little rentals and as we have pets this may cause a further problem.
I am also full of questions about life in Tasmania but can probably get most answers from my sister who has lived there for the past 12 years so feel free to PM me.
