Hi Twinkle,
Can half answer your question. We brought our computer and it works fine. Don't think Ian had any problems getting it up and running (didn't hear any swearing). We also brought our TV &video. we haven't tried the tv to see if it will work (haven't had an ariel installed yet). We have set our UK TV & video up inthe family room so the kids can watch their Uk Videos on it. Have connected a NZ bought PS2 to it as well. NZ videos play in our UK video player. We bought a NZ TV and a NZ DVD for the lounge. it is a multi region DVD so it plays UK DVDS (Fast show & League of gentlemen on order from UK!).
When we get an ariel I will let you know. Also we are trying to find out if our UK videos will play on a NZ video player? If our Uk TV didn't work would plugging an NZ video player in and getting the signal through that make it work?
Also a good tip I picked up on this forum is bring your extention leads then for computer and stuff you need only change the plug on the end of the extention!!!

Here a little snipet of advice from www.gomatilda.com
Televisions and video recorders made for the UK will not work in Australia, because the frequency of the sound signal differs between the two countries - you might be able to tune into a TV station and see a picture, but you won't be able to hear the sound. However, Australian videos will work on a UK player (but not once from the USA), and so it might be worthwhile taking the video and TV so the children can watch videos without interrupting you!
By the way im new here, my wife and i have just lodged our application.
We are hoping to settle in adelaide where my mother and step father live, we have been out to stay 4 time in as many years and love the place.

Twinkle was after advice for electricals in NZ, not Australia. Hopefully, the same problems don't exist in NZ but if anyone knows differently, let us know.

Unfortunately, it is the same for NZ. I've met a few people who've bought TV's over & were disappointed! PC's work fine in NZ, but as for TV's you're probably best to sell yours before you leave the UK & buy a new one in NZ.
On another note, the quality of free-to-air TV in NZ (& even Sky!) is nowhere near that of the UK....I very rarely watch TV these days as it's so sh!te (commercials every 15 mins, lots of imported American sitcoms etc) Trust me, once you get to NZ you'll never grumble about paying the licence fee ever again!!

Does anyone know if UK videos will play on an NZ video recorder?
Am I wasting my time taking vids without the UK video recorder? I sort of think there is no such Region business as with DVDs, other than the age old US video format.

Paula, the TV will only work fully if you connect it to a NZ VCR or Sat box, like you said, you also need to use a scart socket to connect.....or have the telly converted..
Have a look at this thread - http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...964#post962964 -
That post also says that videos will work both ways..

Yeah sussed that now. Our Uk TV will work if we use the scart socket. No problems with videos have borrowed NZ tapes from friends and lent out my Uk ones they play fine.

Hi:
The PC will work fine. If you look on the back of your PC you should see a switch on the power supply (next to fan) that says 110V/220V.
The reason this works is because the PC components inside only uses DC current (12V, 5V, and special low volts for CPU). The power supply in the PC converts the incoming AC to the needed DC voltages.
As for DVDs here's what I did. Take them out of the cases (store the cases with some friends/family if possible because you can pick them up on a later trip. Put the DVD discs into the paper envelopes that you can buy for CD's (or use one of those padded travel wallets). That should save on space and weight. Bring them with you.
When you get to OZ just buy a region free DVD player and use the discs. The region thing is a pain and not just US (there are 6 regions, I think AU is region 4, UK is region 2, US is region 1).
As for TV, I would sell it in UK and just buy a new one when you are ready for it once you've settled in AU. Who knows you might enjoy outdoors so much that you could hold off buying TV for a long time. Also you won't need to worry about breaking it during transport if you just leave it in UK.
Good luck

Hi Donna,
UK video tapes work fine in NZ video machines, I regularly tape things off TV here and send them to my dad in NZ to watch.
Cheers

The only question mark remains over TVs.
We have decided to take ours to NZ (main one plus small bedroom one), and worse case we will hook them up through a VCR or satellite decoder. Best case is they can be switched to work on PAL B, as many newer models can.

We brought only our vcr's & videos. Sold the tv. bought one here.
The videos will play through the UK vid to the NZ tv, but no sound!!
As it is stereo, take the leads out the back of the vcr & plug it through your HiFi!
But you cannot record NZ tv programmes on a UK vcr. Scart doesn't change anything either.
As someone said NZ sound/vision frequencies are different.
Paula, if you want all of the free channels you will need about 3 bloody ariels at different positions we were told, we bought some rabbit ears (wait for it!) and its all fine. If you do, buy an extension so you can move it about to get best results. A lot cheaper too! 10 bucks!
