Suburbs west of Regents Park best to avoid (and I am generalising here) are Liverpool, Fairfield, Cabramatta.
To the right of Regents Park, Strathfield and Burwood are close by and more respectable. Parramatta to the north is not bad either.
Regents Park is on the train line so your options where to live are quite flexible. We lived in Petersham for most of our time in Sydney and really liked it. Handy to the city (8 - 10 mins by train) yet far enough away to feel like you've escaped from the city after a day in the office.
If you want to go further inner city, then Glebe, Randwick etc are very nice. Try and avoid Waterloo & parts of Redfern.
good luck....& look out for the mardi gras parade :scared:
