Smile Sydney suburb 30 minutes from Wynyard station

Apologies for another suburb question, but Sydney has so many suburbs! We are looking to rent a place by the train line that has around 30 (max 40) minutes travel time to Wynyard station (not sure if there is a ferry stop in the area). We are a couple with a toddler; both are planning to be working within half a year of arrival. We are looking for a nice green suburb with a village feel if possible, with a park for our son, 10/15 minutes from the beach, cafes, restaurants and shopping within an easy reach. We will prefer to rent a 2 bed house, but do not want to pay more than $650. Oh yes, and we will need childcare. Is that possible? Any ideas are welcome.

Not many such places exist, unfortunately .

There are only three train lines that you could possibly consider (North Shore Line, Eastern Suburbs or Illawarra line) as all the others take you west, away from the coast.

40 minutes on the North Shore line takes you to (roughly) Hornsby - but Hornsby and all the other suburbs along the rail line are more than 15 minutes from a beach.

The Eastern Suburbs line is only 15 minutes to Bondi Junction so anywhere along the line is within your max travel time. All Eastern sububs are within 10 minutes of a beach but you're unlikely to get a house within your price range.

40 minutes on the Illawarra line is roughly Sutherland. This train line does not go though Wynyard, though - you have to change at Town Hall or walk from there. Sutherland is probably about 10-15 minutes from Cronulla beach so is a possibility. You'd definitely get a 2-bed house within your price range around there.

The Sutherland area is really your only option - unless, that is, you're prepared to compromise a bit on your wish list.

Agree with the above post. Another option is Manly – no train line, but you could get the ferry to circular quay (25-30) and then walk from Circular Quay to the Wynyard area – its 5 – 15 min depending on how fast you walk. Lol

If you are prepared to sit on a bus for 30 min to Wynyard rather than a train then you would have a lot more options along the coast.

Good Luck.

Just re-read your post - originally thought you wanted to travel by train only.

If you were happy to travel by a bus you should consider Randwick. It's about 30 mins to the city and 10 minutes from beaches. Very green with the mammoth Centennial Park nearby. Loads of cafes, restaurants and the best shopping in Sydney up the road at Bondi Junction. You could probably get a 2-br semi in the area within your price range.

I lived in Neutral Bay and McMahons Point and got the ferry to work very easy.

have a look at North Sydney/McMahons Point, not 10mins from the beach, but soo convenient for both Sydney companies and North Sydney companies (obviously) and there are loads of parks all around, our neighbour says that you should never need to walk more than 1 block to get to a park - and it seems to be right. We just took my niece and nephew to Graythwaite Park for the afternoon and they absolutely loved it. The beach is easy to get to on the weekends, either into Sydney for Bondi or up the coast to the northen beaches and Manly. Its really brilliant and so much going on but still leafy and green, as a place to start out you cant go wrong!

Balmain may be a possibility - it's not as close to a beach as you'd like, but makes up for it in SO many other ways. Ferry to circular quay takes 10 mins, or regular buses to QVB (pretty much Wynyard) 15-20 mins. Cafes, upon cafes, upon pubs, upon restaurants, upon pubs, upon cafes. Two of my favourite pubs in the whole of Sydney (I've been to a few ) are in Balmain.

You should be able to get a small terrace house for that money. Balmain is ace.
