SYDNEY! Salary A$85000/year! for family of three!

Re: SYDNEY! Salary A$85000/year! for family of three!
Exactly. Some families may be happy with the life that $42,000 brings them, a lot aren't - and I do know some personally, who say while they can survive, it isn't "living" in the way they would like it to be.
Also there is one hell of a vast difference between living on $42,000 in Cairns as the wife of an Aussie with a life already established here, and living in Sydney as a new migrant family trying to set yourselves up in an unknown environment.

And as for being the wife of an Aussie who is already established (as you put it) never assume you know the full story, we are starting at the bottom of a very low pile but are just happy to finally be together and yes that might be a little idealistic but we don't feel we need a lot of money to make us happy, we know we need it to live.
You will do what you what is best for you family and i hope you enjoy your journey,
i don't know of the area's you have enquired about, but i do know we are in what is supposably a rough area of Cairns and after what i have seen living around the UK i am more than happy where we are beginning.

I personally would prefer to live closer to the city but there are nicer suburbs than the ones you have mentioned in the outer suburbs. Those areas do have quite a bad reputation.

That income and kids will get a $250,000 dollar mortgage and you will need to pay a deposit and other costs on top. OP will need to work out if struggling in western Sydney is worth the move.
Where in W Sydney is that house? It is a big place with OK and awful areas.

The poverty line for 2008-09 was about $40,000 per year gross.
$350k for a house where I used to live, in Sydney, is pretty normal even now, and seemed to be a safe enough place, in general. It suits a large number of average people.

Was a similiar methodology used? OP would still not get a 350K house without a 120k deposit.
$85,000 per year below poverty line now ??

Its a computer programme from microsoft, what of it?
I haven't enquired about any areas I came here as the wife of an Aussie several years ago. He had a house, job, furniture, the lot. We lived in a Brisbane suburb and had a joint income of around $50 for the first four years or so. And we were broke at the end of each month - thats not to say everyone on that income would be, purely personal opinion - to which everyone is entitled. My only point with your post was that there is a vast difference between the cost of living in Cairns and the cost of living in Sydney (which is what the OP was asking about).
It wasn't meant as an attack and maybe the word materialistic wasn't the correct word to use but being shot down for having an opinion is a little ott
And as for being the wife of an Aussie who is already established (as you put it) never assume you know the full story, we are starting at the bottom of a very low pile but are just happy to finally be together and yes that might be a little idealistic but we don't feel we need a lot of money to make us happy, we know we need it to live.

EDIT: I think I may know the source of this misunderstanding. I think the OP is looking for a 360k house, not a 360k mortgage?

I still believe that if needs be you will survive on whatever money you have if that is what you so desire, not always easy as said
Hope it all works out for you OP

I base it on my experiences with two kids and a single income getting a mortgage. Run the numbers through some of the bank calculators.
Huh? He's looking for less than 4 times his salary, he would seem to me quite a good risk. Why would he be expected to have an LVR of less than 66%?

Haven't seen anything about it yet. Westpac just says $72,000 minimum or else mortgage protection insurance. Not doubting you, just wasn't aware of this. I would have thought it was all about the LVR ratio. In theory with the direction the banks seem to think the market is going it's a no brainer.

Banks here are dependent on foreign funds to fuel the mortgages. Apparently they are having a job persuading funds to lend hence the need to keep mortgages at quality. What I found is that the amount that could be lent would increase with less children. The OP is just in a very similiar situation to myself hence I am quite certain on the numbers. A few years ago the story was very different.

That sounds incredibly prudent. Too prudent for most. I know those are the requirements in Ireland now but I thought Australia was still in bubble mode. The bubble is a goner overnight if that's the case.

Reduce the wife and kids and you get more money.
I think I understand what you mean now. They will only lend him $240,000? So 3 times his net income.
