Hi All,

I tired searching several times so apologies if this question has been answered many times as I'm sure it's not the first it's been asked but our situation is that my partner and I would be looking to relocate to Oz and we're not 100% on where we want to end up.

What should we expect from Sydney, Perth and Melbourne? I'd be interested to know salary and cost difference (rent etc), lifestyle, employment, culture, lifestyle, weather etc?

Salary wise, if it helps I'd be roughly looking at a salary of $70-80k + bonus (ce$30k) and my partner would earn $50-$60k ish and we've no sprogs

Perth BBQ and outdoor life style

Melbourne for Night life, Entertainment, Sport and the most European feel.

Sydney for all round good times, plus accessibility to lots of boating if your that way inclined..

I personally would opt for Sydney or Melbourne, and would pick where I could live the closest into the CBD on either. Where you can afford closest in is where I would pick. Both Similar size cities... Melbourne slightly ahead on night life

Although I've lived in Melbourne all 30 of my years in Aus... it isnt a World city and Sydney has that feel..... Probably because of the tourists.


Combined wages quoted are slightly over the national average which is running at close to 70k per annum.

All great cities!
I would recommend Melbourne or Perth.
Melbourne is great for nightlife, culture, events, restaurants, shopping - and most people love living there.
Perth if you like warm weather, beaches and outdoor activities. Plus there is decent shopping and nightlife here too. Perth is also a growing city and there is lots going on in the next few years development wise.
Sydney - also great but the cost of housing including rent just seems astronomical to me.

THe housing costs are pretty much identical for all 3 cities.

Having no children I would go for Melbourne or Sydney well before considering Perth.

Far more diversity in both above mentioned cities and Perth frankly is not worth the cost of living here.

Also a rather expensive move at a later date if you did decide to try Perth then move East later.

But go back over some of the old posts there is plenty on all cities mentioned.

Perth has plenty of boating opportunities as well - river or ocean, sailing, motor, canoes, ocean kayaking, surf club stuff, etc. Similarities might end there though.

Thanks for your replies, very helpful indeed. For us everywhere has some appeal, it's just making the right choice but I guess when you come from a 300k population city in Scotland, there's an argument that you just can't go wrong!!

If you're a recruiter then you want to head to either Melbourne or Sydney. The market in Perth is so small it is not funny. In recruitment, Perth is mainly satellite offices of firms based in Melb/Syd.

What sort of recruiting is it? Wouldn't Perth be busier than other cities with mining, O&G or some construction?

Come to Sydney and you will be in good company as nearly all the agents seem to be from the British Isles

Not necessarily. Many Melbourne & Sydney based agencies are placing people into those fields as well and you have to remember, there is about as much mining and O&G in Perth city as there is in Melbourne & Sydney.

Lots of logistical and other support industries are in Perth, though. There might be more onsite during construction and start-up, but more are employed offsite in the long-term.

Perth is a country town in comparison to Melbourne or Sydney. Having a look on Seek, there is about 100 recruiter jobs in Perth, 480 in Melbourne and 700+ in Sydney.

The salaries for recruiters are also lower in Perth.

Yes, Perth is only a quarter of the size of Sydney or Melbourne, but its smaller size suits some people - a lot easier to move around and probably less crowded. BTW, www.seek.com shows recruitment (agency) jobs as 162 in Perth, 736 in Sydney and 415 in Melbourne. Recruitment (internal) jobs are 125 in Perth, 116 in Sydney and 93 in Melbourne. Can you tell us about the likely differences in agency vs internal recruitment jobs and why does Perth have considerably more of the latter than Sydney or Melbourne, compared to the population?

An agency recruiter works on positions for their many and varied clients. An internal recruiter, or in-house recruiter only recruits for positions at the company they work for. Agency recuiter usually earns a base + commissions, internal recruiter usually just paid a basic salary although some do get a bonus.

From those figures it looks as if recruiters aren't the flavour of the month in Perth and there are more companies attempting to do their own recruitment instead of engage an agency recruiter.
