Default Sydney to Melbourne road trip

We are taking a few days off over Easter and are driving down from Sydney to Melbourne via the Princess Highway. Can anyone recommend a good spot mid way (ish) to spend a couple of days to break the journey up?

We have a small child in tow, so looking for somewhere quiet to chill out.

On the way back we are taking the Hume Highway, so also looking for a one night stopover, but really just a place to kip.

Why Canberra of course!! It is quiet and there are the parliament thingies to go see (not sure your little one would be that interested though!) When we went to Canberra there was an outdoor concert going on - I expect there are some things lined up for Easter there (check out www.canberraschild.com.au) Or the Snowy Mountains - can get the ski chair lift up the hill and go for a stroll?

Canberra may be an idea on the way back, but I was looking for something on the coast on the way down.

1001 choices. What about a B&B?
Selecting Eden at random (coastal):

Hi Gordon
We did the trip last year, down on the inside, back up by the coast.
Batemans bay was nice, as was the entrance you should look that up. But a real treat is a place called pebble beach, there is fantastic view there and if your lucky you can see the roos go to the water to drink.

Jarvis bay is also supposed to be nice but we could not go there because of the fires, you may see the dolphins if you do.

P.S.

If you stop at a town on the way down that has a submarine in the middle of it, try the cafe, best cooked breakfast i had in oz.

Hi Gordon,

We did the trip over Christmas with a 6 and 8yr old.

We had a fantastic time. We stopped at Eden/Merimbula for a couple of day and used the Best Western Motel. Motel was like any other family roomed motel but I thought that area, both coastal and inland was so beautiful. It took us about 61/2 hrs from Melb to get there.

The next place we stayed was Nowra, which in itself was nothing special but from there we went to a place called Kangaroo Valley. Very pretty, lots of waterfalls etc.

Bateman's Bay is great too, as is Pebbly Beach which the kids loved because of the roos, but Eden/Merimbula has to be my favourite for sheer beauty.

The Hume highway is pretty boring tho' and our stop was out of necessity rather than for somewhere we wanted to stay.

Hope this helps!

Coast on the way down I agree with Suffolkdiva, Eden/Merrimbula/Pambula are nice areas & about half way.

Check out www.travelmate.com.au for trip planning & accom ideas.

PS. Canberra is out of the way coming back! Try somewhere like Holbrook (a total dive, but if its only for somewhere to sleep you should be ok.) Or Gundagai.

We did the Hume trip in one straight go. We set off at about 5pm and arrived back in Melb at around 4.30am. We had a brief stop for tea and then a stop at a couple of service stations on the way. The kids slept for the majority of the way and we took turns sleeping.
