Red face Sydney Bound

Have read a few threads on this constantly evolving subject. My OH and I are moving to Sydney under on a 457 visa in July 08. Whilst we have been to Sydney on holiday a couple of times and have a very vague idea of the lifestyle we are a bit concerned about the cost of living. My take home pay after tax and roughly accounting for LAFHA will be approx A$6,800 per month. We have no children and will look for a one or two bed apartment North of Sydney say 5km from CBD. The realestate sites suggest will be paying A$2,000 per month in rent. Does this leave a reasonable amount to live well ie eating out a couple of times a week, run a leased car, and travel NSW one or two weekends per month?

Also my OH has 20 years UK payroll accounts experience - are there plenty of jobs at moment and what sort of salary can she expect?

I've been in Sydney 6 months now (funnily enough from Norfolk via London) so can give you my perspective on things!

Rental-wise if you're looking for CBD or near then you are talking about $400 per week - I rented a 1 bed fully furnished apmt in central CBD and that was $400, bonus is that council rates and water are included in that! One word of advise though, renting at the moment is a dog-eat-dog situation here in Sydney at the moment so my advice is make friends with the real estate agents and they will let you know when something is coming up on their books (that's how I got mine)

Cost of living is pretty much the same as the UK, however eating out is cheaper and so are drinks Petrol is much cheaper but there are lots of extra costs when running a car......I don't have one as don't need one in CBD but there are things such as green slips, pink slips, insurance, etc. etc. so maybe do some howework before you get here if you can

The Sydney job market is very buoyant at the moment so I don't think there'll be any problem there....I can only speak for IT but it's an employees market and we call the shots

Obviously just my humble opinion but hope it helps......btw Sydney is great, you'll love it

Thank you very useful - we were looking at short term furnished 1 bedder in CBD too. Australia does seem popular with us Norfolk folk, judging by our recent hols there.
