kicking to touch results in a gain or loss of ground, your ball or their ball depending on whether

1) the kicker is in/ outside his 22
2) whether it bounces before it goes out
3) whether the kick was from a penalty, free kick etc

confuses me no end..if you lineout is good, then you may have a chance of stealing on their throw..

That's you're only chance - to beat the Ausie's. Now the Aussies will be a different proposition.:D

By the way, The Times has been running a daily 'insult watch' about 'Pommie Bashing'. My insult watch of the weekend was the 'Sweet Chariot' singers at the OTHER semi-final.

I know we'll probably get beat next week (its our lot in life to not win anything), but at least I thought I'd have the benefit of a week or so where I could rejoice in us making the final.

I see the papers have already started getting into us. The way they go on you'd have thought Australia scored 10 tries at the weekend. As it is they scored 1 try, and that from an intercept, so they managed to actually creat none themselves. Apparently this doesn't matter.

Topic for discussion:

what if England played France on Saturday in 30+ heat and Aus played NZ on Sunday in the wet'n'wild.
Would we be looking at NZ-France final?
You should try the papers in the UK mate. One suggested England will be delighted that are not playing New Zealand in the final. Yeah, that'll be right after Saturday:D

One try in the quarter final and semi final and into the final? Eddie Jones might need some advice with his tactics for the final - er, don't give away too many penalties and we've got a chance.

the same applies to England. Don't give away too many penalties. They leaked against Somoa, but have got tighter.

Australian Elton Flatley is a good kicker, and his many kicks allowed Australia to win. And it wasn't even raining!!

I've not read anything saying we have already won, or anything close in any of the broadsheets. I've not read anything running the aussies down, or the way they play. On the contrary....while the aussies, and the aussie papers are all focused on how boring the England game is, the England team and media have respect for how well the wallabies play.

okay... yes I'm bitter, yes I'm a arrogant bad kiwi loser..... but here goes:

England ARE boring. They play a style of rugby NZ dispensed with 15 years ago. Grant Fox was frequently our saviour - been there done that. Frankly as a rugby watcher, I'd rather watch NZ and France any day. If NZ really wanted to win, they could play the boring style of rugby as well. There will be many fans who will wish they would. But even though they'll probably never win another world cup, I doubt they'll resort to such bland, yawn making rugby - it's not how the NZ provincial competitions are played - if they were, the crowds would stay away and the game in NZ would die. I'm not even sure they know how to play that style of game anymore - it's not fun, and it's not fashionable (in NZ).

Australia played very well (and they deserved to win), but they play rugby league. It was perfect mistake free rugby - quick play the ball, sliding defense. If you want to watch that, watch rugby league - they do it better. Make no mistake, they well and truly outplayed NZ in every dept - but I'm just it's not a style of rugby that excites me. The Wales Vs NZ game - that was more my style.

It's no suprise it's an Aus vs England final. They play winning rugby - they play the percentages and come out on top. If you want to win then great - but as a fan, it bores me to tears.

One reason rugby is such a popular sport in NZ (and not just for die hard fans), is because it's so attractive to watch.

I think the challenge for any team - is to play attractive, attacking rugby, and win the world cup. The same as Aust has done with cricket. No one has achieved that in rugby yet, but I hope they do.

I'll still be watching on the weekend - I don't care who wins - who ever does will have rock solid defense, kick their goals and will justifiably be crowned the best in the world. But there's been enough boring drop/penalty goal world cup finals already... hardly a show case for the game is it?

Lets hope I proven wrong and we see a tryfest. somehow I doubt it

Alot of sports have an attractive side, and a dogged/determined side. Take tennis for example. Mens tennis can be a case of serve/ace or serve fault/fault. Or football, you get a team content to hold it back and play for time the whole hour and a half.

If you want to win, you can't always play the game in a way thats good to watch. Unfortunalty....

Badge Nov 17th 2003 3:03 am

England can unleash the backs when they want to, but choose to play it safe. They scored 3 tries against Australia in June.

The Rugby played in the Super 12 / NZ is great to watch but its not RWC/Test Rugby.

that reminds me..

There's a golf quote:

"Driving is for show, putting is for dough"

yes it's definitely not RWC finals rugby. I wish it could be though - although unless there are radical rule changes (which would cease rugby as we know it to exist) it won't happen.

I think the point of my rant, was that people often get so wound up by the 'arrogant' Kiwi and Aussie media & fans calling England 'boring'.

It's precisely because the fans are raised on super 12 rugby that England style rugby appears boring. It's not something many fans enjoy (or are used to) watching. Sure the tri-nations has some 'boring' games as well - but in general, the media & fans also don't get too excited about those games either (though they are glad if their team wins).

Granted, in top level sport, you get hard low risk games everywhere - but I think you get them rugby more than others.

Kiwi/aussie fans who like free flowing rugby and label england/JW 'boring' don't have a personal vendetta against the English - it's they find that style of play boring, and are bemused that other people defend it so rigorously. It's nothing personal :)
