At the risk of winning The Nobel, Stating The Blatantly Obvious, Prize, the reason why you can't get a lot of UK goods is because you now live in Australia. Apparently, The UK is on the other side of the planet. Don't get me wrong, it is lovely to have familar things and I used to go to an English Sweet shop in Oz for treats but sweet Mother should we not be grateful we have the means to go and get food whenever we want with choice. Some poor sods in not so well off countries don't have it so good. Merlot |

They only sell that in Uk supermarkets.

Re: Supermarkets!!!!
Our friends are called Steve and Sue, so thats at least 4 nice people that live in Bittern. The place you were thinking of near Arthurs Seat is called Dromana, but personally its OKish but I wouldn't live there, its got a bit of a dowdy atmosphere about the place which I cant really pinpoint why. Arthurs Seat though is great when the weather is clear and the chairlift is has been declared safe now after the accident a couple of years ago.. If you concentrate your search on Frankston South, Mount Eliza, Mornington or Mount Martha you cant go wrong. Neil

Yes, but sometimes the world is a small place.... :) Any tips on where to settle down? We went up to Arthur's Seat (but it was foggy and I did not fancy that cable car from which someone had already fallen.... ) there is a town called Dromedar so something like - supposed to be cheapish to buy? We are looking for a "shedish" type of house (my other half is a carpenter and pretty handy on plumbing, etc best leave etc out :D ) on 1/4 acre of land with all connections to mains, etc and road access. Maybe you have a few tips.
Is life in general easier over there?? Take care, Syltgirl |

Thanks again Jessica Rabbit There have been a few threads on here about Toowoomba, here are just a few http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...ight=toowoomba http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...ight=toowoomba http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...ight=toowoomba I used to live near there when I was younger (ie Toowoomba was my closest centre of civilisation, I owned a farm near there), I personally like it & Im sure its improved in infrastructure etc since I was there, but then I like the quiet life, it wouldnt be everyones cup of tea :) . |

The supermarkets do vary hugely. I worked in the software supply area for retail and I was speaking to someone about Bi-Lo. When they take over a new shop they used to purposely tatty it up a bit to give it a cheap feel. Things like remove floor tiles. They would seal the floor tile so it was hygenic. I don't miss the ready meals. I do think meat is better. I havn't missed or wanted for anything. There are certain things that I would like but the fact that they are not sold here is just something you get used to. Makes those little things ,ore special when you get visitors. Has anyone noticed a crisp revolution seems to have started here. Seems to be a lot of new flavours and stuff going around. fetta and herb were veryy nice |

Thanks again Jessica Rabbit G'day Jess :) Toowoomba is a big country town at the top of a range on the Darling Downs. It's quite spread out and 'open' looking; clean and country feel to it. Nice place: I could live there! :D It's usually a bit cooler than Brisbane and has a 'Carnival of Flowers' every Spring - very pretty. I guess you've Googled it and found various tourism links, etc? Here's a link, which you may or may not have, for the Toowoomba City Council which will give some good info too. All the best with your move there. :) PR |
Re: Supermarkets!!!!
Hey Jan, are you walking around these supermarkets with your head up your arse or something ?
Try the European aisle luv ;) I'll try and be as honest as possible when I get to England in 4 weeks, by comparing say Tesco's and Sainsbury's Mkeynes, With our two quite big local ones, Safeway and Coles Coburg, both with around 22 checkouts Lets put it this way, Safeway Brunswick (albert st), has about 6 different deli sections, and about 8 people working behind the counters. So if Tescos's or Sainsburys anywhere over there can compete with that I will be suprised. Safeway Coburg, has Dan Murphys right next door, Dan Murphys is a 10 Aiisle bottle shop, Heaven !!! |

Sorry sport - Pom strawberries are the best. Due to variety or horticulture - I dunno. Should get some Pom immos to show how. |

Re: Supermarkets!!!!
Hevs, try Meditteranean Wholesalers, Sydney Rd Brunswick, for that Monteray Jack cheese. Maybe next time your over to a windy hill function.
Basically as they say locally here, Its a 'wogs' shopping paradise ;) It's as big as a coles, but dedicated to European and other ethnic foods. |

Probably the climate which lets them grow slowly. If you grow your own the battle is keeping the squirrels off them. There are some good apple varieties but the supermarkets shun them in favour of cheaper, shinier, rounder imported varieties. Raspberries there are also excellent. No walk in fridges in the bottle shops in the UK but you get an excellent variety of wine and beer from around the world. The indiginous wine industry is too small to bother protecting and the EU is an open market. The British are too hooked on shopping at the supermarket rather than demanding good fruit and veg from the local grocer. |

Re: Supermarkets!!!!
Oh supermarkets again - a "forum favourite."
I am unable to get: 1. malt loaf & 2. grape nuts..........apart from that life is just rosy. I love the Woolies round the corner - always parking space - v. friendly service and it sells around 30,000 different products - that's more than sufficient for me. |
