We are looking at suitcases and have a total allowance of 90kg (3x20kg +10kg).

Anyway, what do you think would be best ? Softcase or Holdall ?

Depends on what youre bringing... With that allowance you could have a mixture of both...

These ones are very lightweight and have plenty of room inside altough at first glance it doesn't appear so - I lent my nana's for a trip to Ibiza and will be purchasing one to send over to Oz for when I arrive.

Depends on how much you value the contents, if youve ever seen the way the baggage handlers throw the luggage around. We wouldn't use anything else other than hard cases.

We've had this discussion once or twice before so have a search.

Hard cases for me, wherever I go. The 4 Samsonites we bought in 2001 for our first trip to Oz earned their pay despite doing what's probably a few hundred thousand miles. When they crack, they've gone, but one's still going strong - the others replaced by today's models.

And the opposite for me!

I buy the lightest (strong) nylon bags I can find, which weigh around 0.5kg each rather than 5+ kg for solid suitcases. Never had any damage.

(N.B. Even using light nylon bags, 3 of us had 130kg of luggage on the move across. Hard suitcases would have cost us even more in excess baggage charges.)

We used a mixture of both. We bought a couple of cheap, large, lightweight suitcases from Tescos. Hubby was a bit unsure about the quality but they survived completely unscathed as did my freebie holdall. I must admit I did pack bedding in the holdall rather than clothes as I wasn't quite so bothered about that if it did split or the zip went.

Just to muddy the waters. Combo. Hard case for things
needing protection, lightest holdall for clothes etc. Depends on what you are carrying, we'll be using one of each.

Just make sure it has wheels. Having spent a week last April travelling to the UK, wandering round airports and train stations galore, I'm a huge fan of 4-wheel cases - can push them with a finger.
