Re: suburbs in perth - advice please!
Notice I said "if" people are that snobby.
Quite frankly I don't want to be friends with people like that anyway, so couldn't really give a toss what they think of me or where I live. They have the problem, not me. |

there is NOTHING worse than nOuveaux riche in any society, Take a small colonial setting where money replaces breeding and culture as a foundation for 'society' and heaven help you!!! they have neither the breeding, nor class nor manners to behave properly... WA isnt old enough or cultured enough to have a 'society set' based on anything other than wealth... And the nouveauxally riche pommes are just as bad as the "locals"

I wouldn't know about nouveau riche Brits because I don't know any. Exactly, these people are not in my group of friends, I'm just describing what some Perthites are like, my observations of some aspects of life in Perth. You've got yourselves a bit aerated there . |

The HUGEST majority of people dont choose to include them in their social set, in fact never meet them socially.... This isn't an episode of Real Housewives... people on here are coming to live and work in perth... not to be ladies who lunch and the idle rich. I could describe weekend houseparties where wearing the wrong shoes to dinner prevented future invitations, where selcting the 'wrong' implement to eat ones asparagus resulted in months of behind your hand hilarity at the victims expense ... They are TOTALLY irrelevant to normal people... and to REAL life... So lets get on with living eh? |

No they are not, I agree. I don't know anyone down that way and have never needed to venture there. My friends are from Trigg upwards and, as I said previously, have never judged me.

Perth is life in reverse gear. I don't go backwards, perhaps that's why I don't like some aspects of life here. I do know Perth, though, and how it works. |

Re: suburbs in perth - advice please!
Snobbery is alive and well in the western suburbs. It wasn't the Brits telling me that I wouldn't want to mix with people in Joondalup (I didn't meet many while we lived in Nedlands), or anywhere north of City Beach. It was Australians who assured me that people up there would not be 'my sort of people'!!
You're lucky if you haven't come across this attitude; you must have chosen your suburbs more wisely.;) |

This chaps just asked for advise on perth suburbs..? We too bought the most suspect house in our road - small, not old. We didn't see the need to renovate it - other than re-roof the pergola and wack in a new ensuite but I am sure others would have ripped it down. We'd rather people think we don't need to worry about all that.

And the nouveauxally riche pommes are just as bad as the "locals" Breeding...my mother would turn in her grave... You're right - money recently come by can be crass. I'm sure there is some culture in WA - somewhere. I don't subscribe to the view that everyone in the colonies is lacking it in some way. 'The Aussies' could teach a migrant a thing or two. JUST IN Met up with some mates last week who have moved there. They love Perth - the beaches. They are in the Perth Hills. Soundbites: "not as classy* as Kalumunda". "local pub is not as nice as our local [in Melbourne]" "shops are full of ferals" "Perth city - no class*". "People don't think the same". *said with irony In sum they were very critical and harsh, (too harsh?) but, still LOVE Perth and their decision. |
