That Western Suburbs area is where everyone who is somebody in Perth aspires to live and raise a family. The area has improved and will improve further now has about 7 bars. Scarborough unlike Freo is where the beautiful people are. In terms of Culture, Bars, Cafes though Freo is superior but it's hardly a reason to move down there.
Scarborough was the biggest victim of Perths large Bordem factor about 8 years ago. During Perths teenage Import car craze the place was besotted with import cars, heavy drinking and even a riot back in 2003. This forced major changes to the beach which is now after all this time only now starting to recover. Before this...It was dominating fremantle Weebie, just a little tip ;) Just because you aspire to live in Scarborough doesnt mean the rest of the world does. I can easily afford to buy in Scarborough or any of the Western Suburbs that you are so fond of (OK maybe not Peppermint Grove LOL) but I chose not to because that is not the sort of lifestyle I currently want to live. When I state that that the beach at Scarborough is not as good as the beach at Cottesloe thats because for me its not. For you it might be. Horse / courses and all that. For some people the Culture, Bars, Cafes etc of Freo might be reason enough to move there. Again Horses / courses etc. Your constant refrain of "only people that live in XXX suburb are worth knowing, anybody else is the shits and envious" is showing up your lack of life experience, your lack of maturity and your lack of class. |

People on this forum love to belittle suburbs they can't afford describing them as "overpriced, overrated, not as good, snobby". Both Scarborough and Fremantle are good with lifestyle, water, cafes, close to the city and out of most peoples price range on this forum. If you have the money then live in these areas.
Freo has better culture and much better public transport. Scarborough has better beaches but is closer to the city. Both areas are close to Cottisloe which is important great stuff down there. If you have a car its easy to get to one another. I used to live in Scarborough and Study in Fremantle. As a side note, if you don't mind me asking, how old are you? I just find it incredible that you are actually old enough to live on your own, nevermind have a mortgage. :) |

Property developers in Perth in many cases are taking migrants for rides. I don't belittle suburbs, I just warn people that this is happening and what people may think if you live there which in many cases is bloody accurate.

Yes you do. You belittle suburbs and the people that live in the ones you don't deem acceptable. I have friends that on paper are millionaires. Not once have they looked down on me because of where I choose to live. They are my friends because they like me based on me not on my material worth. Anyone who does that has no breeding.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the replies, and lively banter!
To answer a few of the questions.. We are going to be renting for 6 months and are looking to spend somewhere around 300-350pw in rent. We won't have a car to begin with so will be reliant on the buses/trains to get to and from work. My wife is a teacher so she will hopefully be in a school somewhere and I'm going to be doing any work I can get. I guess both places will have pros and cons but we were just worried that scarb may be too quiet/not enough going on with restaurants/cafes/bars etc and that freo is 'industrial' and too far from the beaches? We have noticed that freo is a bit more expensive so we probably would have to get a smaller place to compensate but we're not too worried about that. Keep the advice coming-more the merrier! Simon |

I think if you really knew what you were talking about you would know that all 'the beautiful people' are actually one suburb over at City Beach or over at Dalkeith / Crawley ;) didnt they send you the invite? |

Perhaps I generalise poorly for instance Mandurah has some real classy areas. The reality is that some of these areas do have issues that unless someone is willing to tell them then they won't find out.
There are ways of telling them and then there are ways of telling them. You way is turning people off listening to you, even if sometimes you do have valid points.. The delivery is equally as important as the message - Think about it! |
Re: suburbs in perth - advice please!
Scarborough traditionally (we're talking pre Bondy building Eileen her hotel and someone building that blue monstrosity) was a bogan dump, full of rev heads drag racing up and down the beach front. It was rough and ready. Cottesloe and City Beach were classy beachside suburbs - Cottesloe with old money and City Beach newer money. Sandgropers have long memories and that's probably why Scabs (as it was fondly called) will always have a lesser reputation than other beachside suburbs.

No its not. I'm aussie born (east coast, 6th generation) spent some time in Perth as a teenager, left and came back as an adult. Neither in the perth I knew as a teenager or in the Perth I know as an adult do people look down on others because of where they live or how much money they have. Money and location are easily changed with a bit of hard work. lack of Class like you are currently displaying is much harder to change. maybe you need to stop hanging out with the people you currently are and get yourself some better friends. I'll say no more about it. |

Simon In fremantle you could still get a 2x1 on that budget if your timing was right but more likely it would be a 1x1 In Cottesloe (which I still think is a good area for you to look at) you would only get a 1x1 unit and maybe if very very lucky a 2x1 in a 60's style building. if you are happy to be one suburb back from the beach you might also want to think about Claremont. You'd get a 2x1 there for your budget and its got a reasonable nightlife. Until you know what school your wife will be working at (or you get a little runabout car) then I dont think you can make a decision. Transport into the City from all these areas is good, plenty of buses or trains (depending where you are) but if your wife's school is not on a main route you will struggle. Have a look at transperth.wa.gov.au to find out more about the transport. Good luck with your move and I hope you enjoy wherever you end up. |
