Default Suburbs in Perth

A friend recommended the following suburbs in Perth?

The north of the city has the beach suburbs such as:
North Beach
City Beach
Scarborough
Trigg
Cottesloe

Closer to the city centre brings the Swan River into play as well as more established suburbs.
Dalkeith
Applecross
Peppermint Grove
Alfred Cove
South Perth
Como

but the houses in these suburbs seem expensive for what they offer.

What are the following areas like?
Joondalup
Stirling
Swan
Melville

Thanks

Peppermint Grove, Applecross, City Beach, Dalkeith, Cottesloe, South Perth....yes all very nice suburbs but very expensive, money class areas.

Joondalup, I found quite 'sterile' and characterless, but seems OK place to live. Has a railway station, it was created as a satellite city to Perth, to encourage people away from the main city. Nice shopping mall, houses reasonably priced.

Swan, I think its rough in areas, cheap housing which appeals to lots of young families. Near to Midland which has a train station and is dirty in parts.

Stirling, dont really know the area, it has a train station though. I think its near the Osborne Park area, lots of big retailers there like Ikea.

Melville, seems OK, dont know it too well, would probably be dearer than Joondalup or Swan but is better located.

If I had to pick one I would probably say Melville, failing that Joondalup.
Hope that helps, the above is just my personal view.

Cherry

I'd be interested in this too - unfortunately not for that much! But we have been concentrating on Quinns, Ocean Reef, Hillarys, Mullalloo, Kallaroo, Mindarie. Does anyone know what they are like?

Personal view only Maxpaxx:

I like Hillarys and Ocean Reef. Can be windy up there, and some houses overpriced, but you have the marina and Whitfords shopping centre nearby (both nice). Quinns is a bit far out. Mullaloo is a bit messy for me, Kallaroo is a no nothing suburb, Mindarie has a lot of flies. But I havent been in 2 years, so it might have changed. I would pick either Hillarys or Ocean Reef out of that list.
Im sure other people will have different opinions though! Best idea is to have a look yourself. I have always preferred the southern suburbs, but there are some nice places up north.

Million dollar houses? Hillarys, Mandurah canalside homes, Fremantle?

Thanks for that - don't like too many flies!

What is it about the southern suburbs you prefer? We have looked down that way a bit on the property websites. What are the nice suburbs down there I could look into?

Max

Bloody lovely, although not too keen on Mindarie, friends live there, seemed a bit deserted

Yeah - in the real estate pictures it does just look like loads of houses! not a lot else. The thing is we want to get as close to the sea as possible - thats why we were thinking of going up as far as Quinns..but are there shops?

Most of these houses will be over a million. But there are some old houses that could possibly be $1mill or under.

North Beach
City Beach
Scarborough
Trigg
Cottesloe
You can easily find homes under a million in these suburbs. Be warned though, a lot of the houses in these areas are crap 70s homes (except Cott). Cott has beautiful old houses and some pretty nice new ones as well.

Joondalup
Stirling
Swan
Melville
Joondalup -- hole. Cherry6 is right, it's got no character, it's awful and see the troll thread for a more detailed explanation of why I think it's crap.
Stirling is filled with old crappy houses.
Don't really know about Swan or Melville.

If you have up to a mill to spend, you can easily find a better house than what is available in Joondalup, Stirling, Swan and Melville that's close to the beach.

I prefer the southern suburbs because thats where we headed the first time we went to Perth, and I have just got used to the whole area. The north feels weird to me, and I have tried living in some of the suburbs, Ellenbrook, Heathridge, Bassendean to name a few. I like the south, it feels right to me. The north seems to have a lack of things to do, is mainly housing and not much else. Apart from Osborne Park, all retail.

Nice southern suburbs? Fremantle, Rockingham & surrounds(not everyones choice though), Booragoon, Bull Creek, Applecross, to name a few. Hard for me to remember all of them.

I live in Norton Sub Hamdon, near Yeovil. Used to visit the dentist in Shepton Mallet! If I had known how near you were I would have suggested a meet! Too late now, I am flying on Friday!

They seem 'nice' areas, but are mainly just housing estates with houses all of a similar size located near to golf courses. It depends what you are looking for, there is no character like old houses, buildings etc there. Its a little bit bland because it is all new, those suburbs are only a few years old so it all looks so new. I think that as far as safe area, schools etc they are good, housing is affordable, but it depends what you want.

Nervous? No, I am more sad at having to say goodbye, and am more worried about entertaining 3 kids on a long haul flight.....

I will let you know about the place I am staying in, the couple who own it seem very friendly and helpful and have said they will help me all they can which is nice. If you would like any info on Perth sent to you I am more than happy to help, I am going to be doing that for a couple of other people on the forum. Just let me know what info you require
