My husband moved to Australia while he still had a loan and we paid it off from there. (He was on a spuse perm visa...don't know the code...so not sure if this made a difference)

No, doesn't make a difference, Many many people in Aus are continuing to pay off UK stuff, and a lot of us retain UK cards - handy to use when you go over on holiday!

Good luck with your application.

I continue to pay my SLC Loans from here - I transfer money using www.tranzfers.com.au to my UK HSBC account and it is sorted using a direct debit from there. I did defer the loan for a few years while I was studying and not earning enough, but now I'm earning I have to pay (the total was split into 60 monthly payments so it's not too bad.
I usually stick a large amount in at the beginning of the year to cover the payments as each transfer costs $15 (which is pretty cheap) and I also have made good use of the current exchange rate!

Just to follow up my previous posts in this thread, I got a letter a few weeks ago from the SLC saying that I don't need to make any repayments for 12 months. I assume this is because I'm on a WHV and thus technically on holiday rather than economically active. Hopefully this information will be of use to someone.

It's comments like this that will get you into far more trouble with Immigration than a student loan. If they suspect you are planning to stay beyond the terms of your WHV there is a chance you could be refused entry - stick to the "it's a holiday" story.

Who recommended about doing a bunk on the debt? There's a thread full of people talking about the mechanisms they used to pay off debts in the UK after they left...

If you read my post again you'll notice that the letter I sent was to the Student Loans Company in the UK, not Immigration in Australia. You'll also notice that I sent them a letter detailing my situation, while only providing a summary on my post here because my life story was really not necessary.
I got a load of crap off people on this board last night, now I'm being told I'm an idiot. Wow, this place is friendly.

If you're referring to your post about self-employment on this board I can't see how you got a load of crap - just some advice from very experienced agents and other people. Please re-read it and consider your circumstances - people here want you to achieve your goal to love in Aus and are just trying to help. Please don't be too sensitive - even though I realise it's a very emotive subject for you as I know you wouldn't want to be split from your partner.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Hmm....never thought about my SLC loans (pre-1998) being a government debt!
Thankfully mine will be paid off in 8 months- finally!
PS the deferment threshold is 25,936 GBP per year for the older loans, and the debt is cancelled if you never manage to earn this by age 50.
