Re: Student Loan Can I Just Disappear?
just my 2 pennies worth....
generally i think bono should start campaigning for student debts to be written off...lol....
furthermore most people who go on to higher education end up paying more tax anyway which benefits the economy as a whole.
Personally I think, (to hijack Charles "fatface" Kennedy's election spiel) education should be about learning ability not financial ability...
And while we're on the subject...ever thought that student loans which facilitate getting more people into higher education is merely a means to reduce unemployment figures...

If you do not realise that a lot of people will feel angry that you are implying that you want to do this AND you do not realise that the debt does not generally just go away, the only inference I can make is that you are congenitally stupid or unbelievably ignorant - which rather begs the question "what was the student loan used for?" as you do not seem to have wasted any of it on a useful education.
Just my cranky old bastard 2c worth - I think I must have been spiked by the same thing as JTL.

Oh yes - I should add, I have no problem with those whe have the loan and are deferring payment because their earnings do not yet reach the threshold, but most of them seem to either be trying to pay it off or intending to - a huge difference in my book.
Also, if you cannot afford to pay off a student loan, how on earth do you expect to afford to emigrate and support yourself for couple of years before you can start bludging off the state here?
And when you have debts here - where will you go next?
OK OK enough - I am off for my medication ....

As for your comments about a waste of money I guess you do not want any teachers or nurses who have to go to uni and work for below their worth.

Re: Student Loan Can I Just Disappear?
thanks to all those people who have posted on this thread. this has helped me arrive at a decision over my student loan - i rang the company today and have advised them of my situation. i am going to repay for a year then wait and see what my salary is when the deferrment forms arrive in april 06.
im not going to get into any petty arguments with people who have slagged me off on this thread. i guess my question was politically incorrect so i kind of invited trouble. in this case, i can only apologise for my honesty.

The waste of money comment was me being flippant about education being poor if you end up too stupid to realise that talking about skipping from debt will get you flamed on here.

Happy to hear your decision. No need to apologise for being honest, the responses were honest too.

the way i see it, my bank accounts will be closed, i will no longer be residing at my UK address, and the next of kin I put down on my form when I took the loan out is now deceased. so i cant see how the loans company can track me if i dont ring them up to tell them what im up to.
anyone else done this? thanks.

At 3.5% interest just keep deferring and let the loan build up, thats just about the rate of inflation so your debt is not increasing very much, unlike a credit card charging 16% interest.
