Student Life!!
Hello there
After just turning 30 (dear god) I'm coming over to Brissy to start a 2 year course at a TAFE... Ahhhh I'm becoming a student!!!
Being a singleton & with no real committments I'll be looking to either stay in Student houses or a house share. I'm hoping there are a few students that have taken the same route as me that could tell me their experiences regarding living, only being able to work 20 hrs a week & just generally how they got on. Whether they found it hard & what advice would you give
Cheers
Joe

Hi Joe,
Just finished being a student myself. Found it OK money wise - I rented in a share house (Rent: $100 week) and there are plenty to be found. Which TAFE are you at?
Work is easy enough to find if you're committed. There's the usual fast-food, casual retail or gym positions but if are skilled (tradesman or IT type) you can find better paid skilled work easily enough too. I got about $27 per hour for casual semi-skilled work.
Good luck!

Im doing a Cabinet making course at the Skills Tech Brisbane. I've been looking everywhere on the net for accommodation, where seems to be loads around. Would you think it's better to sort something out before I go or look while I'm over there?
tking ; While you were looking for jobs in Brissy, did you happen to notice if bar work was quite frequent??
Werty1 ; Good luck for you husband next week. The horticulture course was my 1st choice then I changed my mind lol.. Will he be at the Brisbane North Tafe?

Hi,
Yes reasonable amount of bar work available - however, remember pubs here are often open til at least 3am - not conducive to studying. If you can find weekend work that'd be ok I reckon, but you'll have a fair amount of competition (especially from people who can work longer than 20 hours per week). Bar work is not all that well paid and tipping is minimal.
Good luck.
