Hi all,

Bit of a long shot this one but, I am currently working within street lighting, I was wondering if anyone knows who is responsible for the maintenance/ design of street lighting within their area? I have searched the net but I can’t seem to find a street lighting institute in Australia like we have in the UK.

Any info would be great!

I'm sorry, I can't answer your question myself. However, one thing I would say is that, here in suburban Melbourne, the street lighting generally is nothing like as bright or as dense as it would be in the UK. I wonder if this means it is not such a 'big deal' over here (hence the lack of a trade insititute)?

Although the darkness can feel unsafe at night, the upside is the lovely views of the stars we get due to the reduced light pollution. Really fantastic.

I know when developers do new estates a bit of streetlighting is required in the development conditons, Ive never seen a specific company name or tho and the lamp design seems to vary according to the estate. So as the estates need approval from local councils contact them in the area you plan to move to, they may be able to point you in the right directon.

There is a lot less lighting here, many roads have zero not just outback, or they may be spaced hundreds of meters apart I think in our 1klm residential street we have 3, like anya says it makes stargazing good tho, at the end we have a roundabout with not a single light. Outback nil for as far as you can imagine. You could be a revolution for us.

You have touched on two of the major isues in street lighting, light pollution and fear of crime. New ligting installations are using whats called a white light that helps reduce the fear of crime, but on the flip side the night sky is is polluted to a greater extent. Maybe you should be working in street lighting

The spacings of lights are designed to the speed of the road, looks like I may need a career change.

On this note, have you noticed that typical suburban streets (especially here in Perth - cant speak for other places) are quite dark and unlit compared to UK ones?
Is there a reason for this?

Had a look in my local phone book and if we have a prob with street lighting around here the place to call is the local council. ( Live about 1 hour SW of Sydney)

The local councils are responsible for the lighting on the non primary road network, vic roads responsible for primary roads and CityLink for current toll road. Although I would say that the aus councils will follow the uk in sub contracting their responsibilities to consultants.
