One of the cons of living in Australia rather than Europe - they have a very 'business first' view of consumer rights (copied from the yanks), rather than the more usual EU approach of holding the b*stards feet to the fire.

Wouldn't it be nice if one of the parties had a policy of reform in this area for the election? As it is, they both fail.

You think RyanAir would treat you any differently?

Under EU rules they have to (depending on the cause of the cancellation). They lost test cases relating to the ash cloud of a couple of years ago and were told to pay up.

Next day for free or your money back today and you didn't smack someone alongside the head ?

Or am I reading this wrong ?

Should it not be - money back today-- and--next day free --??

And you're paying for my hotel overnight

It's not 'right' but it's legal. It's in the fine print and unfortunately a risk we take for a cheap airfare.

You paid for a service, they were unable to provide it and offered you either an alternative provision of the service or your money back. Not like you lost any money. Sounds fair to me.

but i had to pay an extra 600 dollars for a flight the same day otherwaise i would have been late for an appointment. the refund of the money from tiger will take between 2 and 3 weeks. ive got no problem with this if this is what it is i will just have to think about it for the next time.

They don't have to pay compensation, they have to refund or provide alternative.

Depending on the notice given, the reason for the cancellation and the time of the alternative flight offered they do have to pay compensation - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regulation_261/2004

I know. Somebody else had mentioned Ryanair and said you wouldn't get compensation from them either. I pointed out that Ryanair have to pay compensation under EU rules and Bermudashorts said I was wrong, so I provided evidence I wasn't.

Oh, sorry. Guess that'll teach me to not read the whole thread.
