Default Spring Has Sprung in Perth

Well, it's going to be another lovely day today 23 degrees forecast. Spring definitely feels like it has arrived.

I saw 2 birds shagging on an overhead wire this morning and all the wattle birds are beating the crap out of each other. I guess it's just about maggie swooping time too, better watch out for those.

I went for a lunchtime walk along the banks of the Swan river yesterday and it was fantastic, loads of different wildflowers coming out. I'm going to head out bush this weekend to see it in all its glory.

We even had a sea breeze which is great news for us wind/kite surfing types.

At this time of year Perth really is the closest thing to heaven on earth IMO.

Same in Brissy, temperatures creeping up to low 20's (with a recent 28C), grass finally starting to grow and even looking green from recent rain. Although a cold night last night it ill soon be time to put away the oil heaters and get the fans out instead. My pool water has crept up from 13C to 17C in the last two weeks and my next quarterly electricty bill will hopefully be a lot less than the $580 for the winter quarter.

Does anyone know why Spring seems to officially start 1 September instead of the equinox around 21 September?

Apparently the 1 September = Spring is a big deal here!
Pascal was working yesterday(I was lazing around home...) and he said EVERYONE was talking about it! Colleagues, radio, clients that came in!!

I guess it might be because you do notice the difference!
I was much warmer last night!

OK, now, we still gotta quicly by a fan/aircooler/airco, while they're (maybe) still cheap!
Anyone got idea's? (what, which shops)

Happy Spring!

Just been doing some research on vernal equinoxes yadda yadda. Spring is 21 Sept etc but I like the way aussies carve up their year in to 4 based on the calendar months...

I can vouch for that. Got attacked by one in Adelaide when I was there a couple of weeks ago. It scared the living daylights out of me - I wasn't expecting it at all, no one had warned me.

Locals found it funny though !!

Ah yes, I remember the magpies from my youth/childhood whatever.

Doesn't seem to be many around here luckily. Lots of pigeon things(eating our grass ) and some crows. And I can here owls.

Well, 23 degrees tommorrow, that's the warmest it's been since we've been here(15 july).
Still only 7 degrees tonight though!

Sounds Great.Has it been a particuarly wet winter?
Does it rain a lot then clear up and the sun comes out soon after or does it stay overcast a lot in Perth.
Here in the UK we have endless days of low miserable cloud very depressing.

I too am a windsurfy type and one of the perks of moving to Perth for me will hopefully be to windsurf a little more often as we have rely on weather fronts which never appear at weekends.Hopefully will be arriving Jan-feb next year, will be bringing my gear over but will I need to bring my 7.5 and mast to suit it or am I better off flogging it here as the winds look pretty good in Perth? will I just need sails up to 6.5? Oct-March
Regards Mark

um dont know what the 7.5 and 6.5 means, but there is shit loads of winds through out the summer, being the Fremantle Doctor which is what we all hang out for when its bloody hot.

Also to the other post, when it rains it buckets down, then in the arvo the sun is out

leave the 7.5 behind, or u could bring it and use it as a wind breaker or shade sail.

Depending on what kind of style you like to ride (wave riding is very popular here), your weight and board volume, a quiver of 5.0, 5.75 and 6.5 would get you through the summer months with sailing under most conditions, for high wind sailing 25-30knots, a 4.7 might be good.

Seabreezes tend to be around the 15-20knots, with gusts 20-25knots. Ocean is better than the river for full-on consistent wind and various spots have great bump and jump if that's the kind of bag you're into!

My wife is around the 60kg mark, rides a F2 277 - 103L. She's just got a 5m sail which works in most conditions. Ideally she could do with 4.7 and 5.5 as well, but she's moving into kiting now so probably won't bother!

Great spots all around Perth, then an hours drive North to Lancelin provides butter smooth waters inshore with a reef out the back for awesome waves.

Checkout http://www.windsurfingwa.org.au/ for info on windsurfing in WA.

The only site you really need to know is www.seabreeze.com.au checkout the graphs page as this is the screen you'll spend all day long staring at, waiting for the wind to swing!

Perth gets most of its rain in June, July and August, the rest of the year is mainly sunny ranging from pleasantly warm to scorchio!.

It's been a below average rainfall winter but, paradoxically, August has been the wettest for 12 years.

You'll be windsurfing every day for over half of the year. This place is renowned for its consistent sea breezes. Probably won't need the 7.5
