Question Spread the population ?

Natural resources has led to Australia becoming coastal dwellers but is it healthy, or in it's best interest to allow such vast concentrations to reside in so few places ?

The main cities continue to grow and sprawl stretching local resources to the limit. Shouldn't there be some proactive plan to spread the populace ?

It would require government intervention to force regional growth in both population and business and one of the tools could be imposing restrictions on immigration to the larger cities.

Interesting thought and I tend to agree that Australia would benefit from having a few more larger cities, notibly up your way - Rockhampton or Mackay. However for the economy to boom we still need the current major cities to lead by expanding and part of that is providing more people with the necessary skills in those places - so somehow we need to address both matters simultaneously.

Hasn't the govt already tried that with Canberra!

Keep the consumers in the cities so they don't get in the way when you want to dig it up

Also you don't want all those people draining the rivers of all that water you need to chuck on your crops.

Yup, build lots of cities up the top half of WA It's not just immigration though is it. There's all the mexicans moving up here that are helping stuff up our infrastructure.

We've got to make room for the smarter immigrants to move in.

While it wasn't a restriction as such, when I applied on the points system you got more points for living away from the cities, ie 4000 2000 etc - the higher the postcode the (few) more points you got.

When my father-in-law's family emigrated from Russia to Canada in the 1920's they were taken off the boat in Montreal and put on a train for northern Saskatchewan. Once there they could buy a parcel of land for next to nothing and make a life for themselves. There really wasn't the option of 'what city shall I move to?', as they were told they would be settling in Sask.

A little of that in Australia wouldn't go amiss. More forced regionalisation might not be a bad thing for the country.
