From: Victoria Aus,

Hi Laura and Ash, I am also emigrating on a spouse visa (I'm English and Cath is Australian). I have to enter by my inital entry date as shown on the visa (15.01.03) and then it is valid for 5 years. This date is the one year anniversay of my medical check but it could also be the one year anniversary of your police clearance check- it depends which you got first. My understanding is that I can come and go as often as I want during this period but if I am out of the country when my visa expires I am not allowed to re-enter Aus. I think that I have to obtain a further visa called a returned resident visa ot take Australian citizenship to get around thisprior to leaving. I hope I am right or I have just done a lot of one fingered typing for nothing!!!

If you look at your visa you'll find the 5 year period expires 5 years
from visa grant, not from the initial entry date.
You've obviously got the permanent spouse visa, people with the
temporary visa only get it for 30 months.

Not using that visa, anyway.

Australian citizenship makes a lot more sense. Many British people
'never get around to it' and sometimes lose their PR later on as a
result.
