THE South Melbourne Soccer Club has vowed never again to play the Preston Lions after a riot caused the cancellation of a charity match.

South Melbourne president Peter Mitrakas today said he had considered not turning up for yesterday's final because of the Preston supporters' poor track record and would never play them again.

"We saw it brewing about a month ago," he told ABC radio.

"At one juncture I was thinking of not turning up to the game at all."

Mounted police backed up by 20 officers were forced to separate opposing groups of about 200 fans after they rioted on the terraces of South Melbourne's Bob Jane Oval and then moved onto the ground at the Tynan-Eyre Cup final

One fan was arrested for discharging a missile and several rioters set off distress flares, according to police.
