Spiders, snakes etc: a bit of perspective
Many of us on this forum are are a bit worried about being bitten by Au spiders, snakes etc. The following stats put this into rather sobering perspective:
In the State of Victoria, since Jan 2005:
* There have been no reported deaths from spider/snake bites.
* There have been 201 deaths so far this year in accidents on Victoria's roads.
Makes you think, doesn't it?
Anya.

Its rare to come across a snake and they only bite in self defence if you either pick it up, try to kill it or step on it.

Yeah but thats victoria. Queenslanders face death on a daily basis from their 8 legged or no-legged friends.
Been here 4 mths and only saw 1 huntsman, at sea-world on the concrete stands. Stopped shaking shoes out in morning after about 4 weeks, stopped shaking clothes out after about 6 weeks.

[QUOTE=anya4oz]Hey Anya (You're not the Anya that works for Fiona at that Aussie company that shall remain anonymous? If so hi).
I think Bill Bryson has a lot to answer for when it comes to creepy crawlies and slitherines. We spent our first 6 months living in a house which reportedly had funnelweb spiders living beneath it, with two toddlers that's no joke. (Never saw one though). The ants on the other hand, blimey.
A few years on I have only seen 2 snakes (both harmless and in the bush) and I have no quarms asssiting our huntsman spider friends out over the terrace after a big rain (quite like them actually).
Aus is just brilliant for kids, for me and the Mrs. If they could just find a way to swap it around with the USA then it would be in the perfect location too! QUOTE]
If you are thinking of coming here, JUST DO IT, you have nothing to lose, your UK job will still be there if you don't like it, you'd be amazed what you can do!
