I wish I hadn't started reading this thread, before doing so I hadn't given the spiders a second thought. I've just done a search on google for huntsman spider, this led to reading much more about red backs, huntsmans, funnel webs etc I am now freaked.
Thanks for all the re-assuring words but I don't believe a word, I'm convinced there's going to a Huntsman on the dashboard of my car every time I go out (I may just stay in the UK !!!)

I'm disappointed as I've only seen one tiny Huntsman the size of a 20 cent pence in a wood pile, and a larger one in a shed.
In 2002 I saw 3 Huntsman and 1 redback. All outside. One ran up my leg one night.
Inside, I have never seen one.

Been living in Melbourne since 2000...seen one white tail, which by the way have been officially cleared of injecting flesh rotting venom.
There are no funnel webs in melbourne..they are in Tasmania and the east coast states...different types I believe. There is an anti vene for their deadly bite and movement to hospital is required pronto.
Redbacks are everywhere but i haven't ever seen one in melb.
If bitten a visit to hosp is required immediately.
Huntsmen take a bit of time to get used to but they are harmless to people.Again, haven't seen one in Melbourne.
Snakes...well that's another matter.Haven't seen one yet but they are prolific in melbourne drains, near water courses etc.Don't live near running water.
Once ran over a snake in the bush...they're a common sighting out there.
Don't get paranoid.28 million people can't be wrong.
Learn to love your wildlife and they will love you back...well.....
Forget the sprays, fumes etc...get a tabby cat..Problem sorted

Tell the wife not to worry about spiders. It's the snakes, sharks, box jellyfish and blue ringed octopus that she SHOULD be worried about.

Not many people in England know this, bit if you get bitten by an
Australian spider they inject you with their DNA and you end up
becoming half human half spider, like in the film Spiderman.

I heard that, and if you get your father messing about with your DNA you end up half Australian, half Incredible Hulk, like in the dull, monotonous, tediosuly long film.

Well, I was under the impression that it was meant too be good, especially given that it was directed by that Crouching Tiger guy and that Eric Bana(naman) is in it. However, it is really long and boring and the story is weak. We though we'd watch it and then the kids could the next day if suitable, it would have sent them to sleep...

Funnel web spiders, have enough venom in one bite, to kill 6 men, or 12 Aussies
