I think he was actually complimenting the Germans if you read it carefully

In defence (no pun intended), as an ex-grunt who drove both the series 2 and 3 as well as the newer 110 series, I found the series 2 and 3 better off-road than the 110.
I once saw my old RSM clear an area with a series 3 'Rover by just driving around and around in a circle, knocking over small trees as if they wern't there. I wouldn't expect the 110 to do that. Also while driving some troops home from a course, a civilian backed his car out of a parking space hitting my vehicle which was travelling at 50kph. Lets just say mine came off with less damage than his newer vehicle, or a 110 would have(hardly felt the bump).
Also the later models were unstable at high AND low, speed so much that they installed rollcages in them, after there was several fatal accidents. Always felt safer in a series 3, as well as being far easier to fix if you are out bush away from a workshop and diagnostic gear. Surprising what a green twig can do in the alternator of a series 3 if you break down. We trialled the Landcrusier but found it unsuitable for use. If I was to buy a 4WD for offroad, I 'm sure it would be a series 3, even though the aren't great on roads, even though I once managed to get one to 120kph downhill, with the trailer bouncing along behind.
There was an old saying about them "takes a licking and keeps on ticking".
