I spent a lot of time growing up on the gold coast and used to ***love*** it, though not so much now, as Surfers and much of Broadbeach has gotten incredibly tacky. But Surfers is only a small part of the coast and the rest is generally pretty lovely. Southport is good for schools as you point out - also good for longer term education with the TAFE, Central Qld Uni and Griffith Uni. The other good thing with Southport is that you are pretty conveniently located with good access to both the southern and nothern parts of the Gold Coast, and good access to the M1 for Brisbane. Good public high schools also close to southport, as well as Southport High which offers some good extra curricular programmes.
Re hospitals, Gold Coast public hospital is well established in Southport, and there are various other private hospitals in the immediate area (Allamanda and Pindara) as well as private clinincs. I am pretty sure the qld govt announced a new university hospital would be built at Parklands adjacent to Griffith Uni, which can only be a good thing.
For work (ex hospitals), Southport and Bundall are together one of the main business centres on the coast. There some info re Southport on the Gold Coast City Council website as well as the "new residents kit".
Hope this helps

Hi, we lived in Southport when we first arrived and did not like it. Large parts of it are a commercial/ light industry and we saw plenty of evidence of the less desirable elements around. It is also the 3rd most likely place in Queensland to have your car stolen and have friends with experience of this. Saying that there are no doubt decent places there if you have the budget.
I have read your reason for questioning Southport and the above is not intended to be flippant and I am sure there are other people who enjoy living there with no problems.
The Gold Coast hospital has a campus in Robina further south but I do not know if it would meet your needs. I think it is also being expanded.

Re: southport on the gold coast
Gold Coast Hospital has a Paediatric department with 8 staff specialists and they say they can cover most specialities by way of Visiting Medical Officers. Susan Moloney is the departmental director and can be contacted via email [email protected] - doctors in Australia are pretty friendly and much more approachable than in the UK so I'm sure she wouldn't mind you asking for info and advice.
The hospital is being re-developed and in the next 5 (?) years or so will be the biggest hospital in Australia.

Re: southport on the gold coast
Hi
We rent in Helensvale about 10mins from Southport. Southport is great for all the things you said but if I was you I would be looking in other areas all around Southport, like Parkwood, Arundel, Helensvale, P Pines. I have been doing some stand in Manager work for Avon and the people I sign up in Labrador and Southport are not the best of people and because there is a lot of cheap holiday rentals there it hasn't got a community feel about it. When we first decided that the Gold Coast was for us, I did want to end up right next to the coast, but when we arrived and was looking for rentals we fell in love with a rental in Helensvale. I was really worried that we might regret moving out a bit and once we put the kids into school we couldn't change our minds. For the first 3 months here all we did was go out each weekend and look at houses and land in all areas. Arundel was our top area as I felt it was the right side of the M1, we kept on looking at land over in Oxenford, but I had it in my head that it was too far out. Now that we have lived here for 11months I realise that everything is so easy to get to it doesn't matter you are out a bit. Everything is about 10 15 mins drive away, which in my book is great, we lived in Hornchurch, Essex in the UK and going into Hornchurch by car could take 10min sometimes as the traffic was always bad. You have to be careful to get it right for you, if you have kids, as once they are in school you cant really move them again. It take a while to get a feel for a place so dont be in a rush to get them in school.
We have brought land in Regatta Waters Oxenford, and starting building tomorrow :scared: we are owner builders, thats why I am up and 2.40 writing this cant sleep, unlike my husband
Good luck anyway and I hope I have helped, I dont go on here often now, as our lives are very full at the moment and I hate all the poo poo-ers on here.
Jane
