south yarra is it area to avoid?
we are looking for reasonable apartment to stay while we are in Melbourne, most of the one I have looked at are around $145 upwards per night for one bedroom, but this one is for $129 per night, its 2 bedroom apartment, I was wondering can anyone who knows Melbourne well, would you recommend the area.

I have a melb suburbs rating file if you want info on any burbs there. PM with your email address and I'll send you a copy.
I've just checked the file quickly and south yarra has one of the lowest crime rates listed.

Hi,
You'll have no worries with South Yarra - its considered one of the most desirable suburbs of Melbourne, and borders Prahran and Toorak which are very exclusive areas. Its a bustling, affluent suburd with excellent public transport to city, either by train or tram. Often visit family there and never seen any trouble.
Enjoy

If you are near Chapel street be prepared for lots of car racing after 11pm and even with the short term apartment having secure underground parking both cars either side of ours got broken into. Pays not to leave your laptop or PDA on the front seat.

The southbank is basically across the river from the CBD so very convenient for getting some initial jobs done on arrival and meeting up with employment agents etc.
We stayed at the Langham on initial arrival and didnt find it too noisy or anything wrong with the area to walk around at night.
If you are particular worried we can always drive by where you attend to stay and take a few snaps (unbiased photo shots) if that would ease your fears?
Dont be too put off by South Yarra - it may also be the price is low for the time of year?

I'd prefer South Yarra to the area around the Casino. Yuo get queues of traffic waiting to enter the carparks on weekends blocking everything up and then of course there are the drunks who stumble out of the casino (or get kicked out!!) who can be very noisy! We used to live around there and we would get drunks calling us up on the intercom in the middle of the night looking for their mate Dave.

now this is getting confusing for me, now my other option is going to be just to stay in Geelong, as thats where hubby is going to work for a week, I wonder if there is much to do out there for me and the 3 kids.
