The second one was around 1 metre long and was approx 2 metre's from the pool while Mrs LL and kids were in there. As our block is semi rural I don't expect to be able to prevent wildlife living there, but would like to stop snakes from being around these 2 areas.

Thanks LL

Only small ones !!!

Sounds like you have a nest !!!, they generally lay a nest in a shady area, thats cool and dry

Get a snakecatcher round to checkout your place.

Also keep grass cut as short as possible.

Dont leave any flat objects on the ground ( such as ply wood, colorbond roofing etc )

Make sure the kids ( or you ) shut all screen doors soon as you enter or leave the house

Be interested to know if crushed shells would deter snakes ( similar to deterring snails ) sounds weird idea, but someone may know.

I have got "something" turning up in a container which I reckon will keep them at bay, I am going to test them first and then consider shipping over quantities into AU, and no not telling yet what they are. Needless to say I have looked into it and am supplying friends on blocks with snakes and getting them to feedback snake sightings etc.

I am full of silly business ideas!!

Interesting site. However somehow I dont believe that 5000 people in Oz are bitten by a snake each year.

Definitely short grass and nothing left lying around that could be a nice cool shelter - old logs etc. We are sort of semi rural and been here two years. I've still not seen a snake. Gravel is good too. They can't slither over it.

Sorry to burst the myth bubble about gravel but my folks have 2 m gravel paths all around their place they've still had both Red Bellied Blacks & Brown Snakes on the patio area inside of the gravel:ohmy: It may help deter them but it certainly won't stop them. You can hear them slither over the gravel though:thumbup:
We had a large 1.5m brown snake under the house last week, it got caught up in a fishing net & died, I only found it by hunting for the stench of dead thing.

Guinea Fowl are excellent deterrents, they do tend to breed & multiply quite quickly so you could always set up a business selling them to other ophiophobics. They also make a very annoying squawk at all hours so not good for smaller blocks. If you want a few check out the farming section of the local trader, they are often free to good home;)

Keep me in mind if and when you decide to market these.

As our block is semi rural, the 2 snake catchers we called weren't interested in coming out to help.

I have been told by an aussie neighbour that mothballs can deter snakes from under decking / houses etc. Not tried it myself but he swears by them so may be worth a go.

l live on a couple of acres of land, l have 10 cats, they eat all the food like rats, mice, frogs that snakes eat so theres no food source for snakes and the cats crawl into places snakes hide and attack them, does'nt matter if a couple of cats get bitten and die when you have 10. l don't think any snakes bother living on my land, they go somewhrere else, l have never seen a snake on my land or any rats either.

LOL... like your attitude to life. Don't fancy the 10 cats is the only problem.

Obviously marketed by the same people who had electronic rat and mouse repellants in the '80s and '90s . I wouldn't rely on it as their own advertisement contradicts itself within two sentences.
