Re: Small Island mentality????

We live in Richmond (south west London) and my boyfriend is working for a week in Charlton (south east London).
He has opted to stay in a B&B for the week rather than do the daily commute.
He tried it last week and it took nearly 2 hours to get there :scared:
Or maybe he just wants a week of peace away from me
It's definitely the traffic that puts people off driving very far.
Getting anywhere, especially around the major citiers, is an absoulte nightmare, and seemingly getting worse by the week!

Have never minded the travelling here or in UK, I used to drive from Southampton to Nottingham and back in same day, then decided to move there for a bit but was doing the reverse trip back!!

Here I drive all over, Fremantle takes nearly an hour and Oliver and I head down there quite a bit on a Friday for the markets, did Pinnacles in a day (2 3/4 hr each way) no problem and been further down south when we got here, you just get used to it.........travelled nearly an hour for haircut today :D

Graham has no problem driving the distances as he drove all round Oz six years ago, he's talking about doing it again

Here goes anyway on the attitude to travel. I still don't mind travelling long distances in the UK and do so regularly without thinking about it. From SW Scotland we can be in the Lake District, up to Edinburgh etc in 2 hours, Highlands/West Coast eg Oban, a little longer; no worries, 'just do it'. I might be different to others but I enjoy the journey as well - observing other places, geographical features, people etc. Play games such as making up words from number plates, anagrams of place names etc. :D

I've organised tennis teams to play down at Eastbourne on the south coast. How are we travelling the others ask? I'll drive. You're mad, it's 450 miles - yeah, less than Melbourne to Sydney and you don't have to keep to 62 mph most of the way!! It's just what you are used I guess.

Incidentally, with the advent of EasyJet et al I can't get the others to go by car now. Quirkily, I have to drive 2 hours in the opposite direction (to Edi or Gla), check in 1 hour before, fly for 1 hour to Gatwick, wait a while to get luggage and out of the airport, catch the train etc - it takes almost as long by plane as it does by car!

I went to a military tattoo at the MCG many moons ago but I haven't been to the Edinburgh Tattoo - it's mainly for the overseas visitors! I don't agree that traditional music carries a sell by date (eg 1950's) as it will always be popular. One thing that has wrecked Hogmanay programs in Scotland is the attempt to modernise them. Give me some good old traditional music on old year's night rather than the Archduke (Franz Ferdinand, art college posseurs) any day.

As a footy fan from the North East of England, long day-trips are not uncommon. I've been to Portsmouth and Southampton in day trips, as well as Cardiff and Norwich in recent years.

We've usually been beaten too on these trips :(

Mmmmm.... have I ever told you about my parents and us doing the round Oz trip when I was 5 and my brother 3..... Oh, what an adventure. 4 months in a campervan, me doing distance education for year 1 for the first half of the year(teacher sent work out, I did it, and we sent it back for marking)
Mmm, Olivers the right age. He won't remember much of it in later years, but you guys will, and he'll have that change when he's a teenager(sorry, you probably don't want to think about that ;) :D ) And at least he won't be missing out on major schooling.

Btw, something I just thought off, some people hate driving, but some love it, like my dad, he loves driving for hours, I think it gives him time to think or something. I don't really mind it either, and when I'm a passenger I can sleep anyway(couldn't do that as a kid though, impossible, plane too).

It's definetly something that's subjective(right word?) I think. When we used to live up north, we used to drive 200kms up and 200kms back every 2 weeks to Broome (and later Newman), just to get the major groceries.
And when we lived down south, mum and dad, for a while, drove to Perth 3 times a week(350 km) to deliver plants from our wholesale nursery!!!
So after that, driving 150 km's for someone's birthday isn't much.

Stan Collymore? You're Ulrika right, he beat you up in a bar once and now he frequents car parks? :D (only joking, I can't think of another recent famous Forest player)

lol, brilliant!
My mum crashed our campervan twice before they even left Perth! Once into the brick 'fence' in front of the house, and second into a tree on Kalamunda rd. 10 years later you could still see which tree it was, and maybe still if I look carefully.
Anyway, they didn't have any problems going rond oz though, though it needed fixing when they were in Brisbane. They were there for 5 days, and for 5 days it rained... so much for the 'Sunshine State' :p
:D

And at least there's 2 other Cork lads there now who can understand him (O'Shea and Miller).

Sorry about bringing my large island mentality to the thread. :D
