Fly to NZ - much better conditions and probably cheaper.

Brisbane is no good, unless it's water skiing.

NSW ski resorts look awesome from what I've seen on the Weather Channel. June, July, August seem the best months.

I've been to Threadbo skiing and had a great time in fact I preferred it to skiing around Queenstown. The snow is not reliable so if you are going to go being able to do it at short notice is a good idea. I have heard that the best time to go is late August early September

4 of us went to Perisher in August 2009. Conditions were great. However, the apres ski vibe wasnt really there. Jindabine was the closest town/drinkinbg spot which just seems too fasr away from the ski resort.

Next year I'll be going to Queenstown. Was there in November just after the ski season and its an awesome looking ski town.

Perisher and Thredbo would be the most popular ski resorts and obviously the winter months would be the best time (June, July and maybe August)

All those planning to go to NZ - the snow is better, but in Australia you can stay on the mountain and ski in - ski out. In NZ you cannot stay on the mountain and you have a 45 min - 1 hour mini bus drive along precipitous mountain roads twice a day to get to and from the skiing. Just something to bear in mind, especially if you are afraid of sheer drops or get car sick!

I went with mates for a long weekend last year. After 1 day we threw the toys out of the pram and came home. It's over priced, the infrastructure is poor, the snow is ice, and there's too many muppets. NZ is a tad better. Snow quality in Japan is awesome but the time it takes to get there you might as well go US

We went to Falls Creek, VIC in 2008 and loved it. Yes it isn't European style resorts (go to Europe if that's what you want) but it was ski in ski out and a lovely town. Plenty of choice in accommodation style and budget.

Our only complaint was that very early in the season, ie early June, there won't be many lifts/runs open so if you're a good skier you'll get bored easily. That said, later in the season that wouldn't be an issue.

I'd certainly go back, over the trek that sounds like the coach in/out issue in New Zealand, particularly with children. Plus by driving to Victoria ourselves we got to see some amazing countryside and obviously didn't need to pay air fares etc.
