Todays paper report: Premier Peter Beattie said yesterday his record was unlikely to be matched.
"There will be people who love him and there will be people who hate him but the fact is if you look at the total equation and you take the negative and the positive, he did a lot of good for this state," the Premier said.
Not a bad comment from a political opponent![Smile](https://britishexpats.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)

When I first saw this post I thought you were reffering to Sir John Mills, the brilliant British actor who also sadly passed away at the weekend.

He was a disgrace to right-wing politics.
Any of you actually live under his regime? I did for 10 years and Queensland was the Alabama of Australia during this time, a situation for mwhich it is slowly overcoming.

Some great info on his era.

He was a hell of a funny/freaky dude...
Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen throughout his political career and beyond was one of Australia's most quotable public figures.
Quotable quotes by Sir Joh:
"Don't you worry about that"
"Goodness gracious, I know what you're trying to do."
"Just you wait and see."
"Let me tell you, what is good for Queensland is good for Australia."
On news conferences: "I call it feeding the chooks."
On unionism in his maiden speech on August, 1947: "It is a form of treachery and can only lead to economic upheaval of a severity not often experienced."
On industrial relations: "The 40-hour week has given the opportunity to many to while away their time in hotels."
On John Howard and Ian Sinclair during his Joh for PM campaign in 1987: "You can push a 44-gallon drum of molasses up a hill easier than you could push these two fellas."
On the Joh for PM campaign: "I'm a bushfire raging across the country." And when it failed: "I never really wanted to go anyway."
AdvertisementOn former Chinese leader Mao Zedong: "Red is red wherever it is - and I don't trust any of them."
On finances under Gough Whitlam: "Australia is bankrupt. It is even worse than that."
On human rights: "What's the ordinary man in the street got to do with it?"
On condoms: "We don't want any of that sort of thing up here."
On press criticisms: "The greatest thing that could happen to the state and nation is when we get rid of all the media ... then we could live in peace and tranquillity and no one would know anything."

This sick evil man would have chopped down every last tree in the Wet Tropics in the name of 'development' given half the chance. He made Thatcher look like a moderate.

Queensland was something of a running joke in the rest of Aus to a large extent because of him. To a certain extent it still is, which is a real pity as it has come on in leaps and bounds since they got rid of him.
