We've booked one way tickets. We don't intend coming back in a hurry, when we do come back to the UK we will be returning. I have an Aussie husband and I've promised I'll give it at least two years

But you would still havve to pay for a flight back to Oz if that's the case. I thought about it quite a bit. One-way to Oz to start and then rtn tickets from Oz back to the UK again. In saying that it is more expensive travelling from Oz, or so I'm told. It's always a dilema

Does your 18 month wait for tax purposes apply to all of us?

Apologies did not mean to scare anyone - my own personal tax affairs mean I cannot return within 18 months or run the risk of the wrath of the Revenue

Its nothing anyone else should probably be concerned with - unless your accountant tells you so, sadly my financial circumstances are a little more complicated than most

Since I have no plans to come back then its no big deal and in any instance most airline tickets require them to be used within 12 months, so a return ticket would be pointless in my case.

There - all explained

We've done the returns for validation. Next tickets we buy are one ways.

Cheers

Bear in mind that the airlines almost certainly won't give you any extra free baggage allowance if you have a return ticket.

thanks for the info everyone. I wondered whether it would be cheaper buying an open ended return so we could come back and visit but i think it will be one way for us.

We bought one way but wish we had bought return! Not becasue we want to go back but we will eventually want to visit and the flights are much dearer from Oz to UK. If we had bought return we could have bought further return tickets from the UK and paid for them with our UK account. It has just cost hubby $5000 for him and our youngest son to go back to the Uk for his brother's wedding. My mum has just bought return fares from the UK and for 2 adults it cost £1400. So it works out cheaper to book from UK.

I am interested in this. Most people seem to be saying they bought one way but this seemed to be much more expensive?? We are going in November. At this time we can get a return from BA for 672.80. If I book one way the cost is 916.10.

Incidentally, I checked out buying a return to the UK from Oz in November just to see if flights are much cheaper to buy in the UK. Cost comes in at 1828 AUD = 765 pounds.

We plan to return at least once a year but I hadn't realised the return must be used within 12 months. Is that true for all airlines?

I believe that you do need to return within the year for most airlines though i have not checked all of them out.
When I have been checking the prices for return v single fares i have been finding single fares to be cheaper though this may depend on when you are going and where you are going to.
