But they are only $9.95 and we've seen them on offer all over the place for as little as only $2.

When we first arrived we got virgin sim cards on payg as the text between virgin-virgin were cheaper, and as we knew no one and would only be texting each other it seemed a good idea. We then got vodafone sim cards and we spent far more on vodafone than virgin. On contract now with three so not sure about any good deals around at the moment apart from the three payg looks ok, and has cheap calls between phones on the same network.

Vodafone sometimes give em away for free. Or for $30, but with $30 credit on them. There's a Vodafone shop in most shopping centres in Brissy, there may even be one at the airport.
They have loads of different tarifs, of which you can change each time you recharge. There's a tariff for cheaper txting.
I think 3 are also doing good deals at the moment.

Vodaphone shop in Brissie airport is right over to the right as you come out of customs - beside the hire car desks. $9.95 for an empty SIM - registered while you wait and put on whatever credit you want. What you add in $$ you get in free minutes voda-voda (Add $20, get 20 mins free etc etc)

No you can't, I asked before we came.
I couldn't even use my vodafone phone with a vodafone card out here as the sim was locked to the UK.
Good job the phone I wanted was only $149
Other good thing about vodafone is that a call to the UK (landline) is only $3 for 10 minutes.

Check out Optus 'Turbo Charge'. and Optus to Optus.
I pay $30 per month (pay as you go) on the Turbo Charged plan and get £120 credit which rolls over upto a max of $500. The $500 will keep rolling over and you wont loose it.
My wife is on Optus to Optus where she gets 300 mins free to Optus phones for $30 and also phone credit valied for 6 months.
Sure there must be info at www.optus.com.au
Cheers
Neil.

Slightly diverting off track here
Bought a GORGEOUS phone really love it pretty sure I want to keep it.
It's the Sony Ericcson W810i I know they sell the same phone in Australia cause I checked teh website.
Do I need to get my phone unlocked to work on any network before we move out to Australia????
It's on O2 right now compatible with Orange and virgin. However think we might both be on Vodafone once we move out there?
Any suggestions or words of wisdom?
Jen

I had my brand new phone unlocked to any network in the UK, it still didn't work out here. The guy in the vodafone shop told me it needed unlocking from UK networks.
You know when you go abroad and you have to ring them to let you use it abroad, well I think that's what I should have done before we came out
I'd ring them and ask them to do it anyway, it could save loads of hassle when you get out here.

I've got the W810i as well and didn't get it unlocked before we came out. I just ran out of time.
My Vodaphone Sim didn't work but managed to get it unlocked here in Adelaide.
Now works fine.
