Oh you must visit first in case you hate it! Took me six months of travelling the whole of Australia (really!!) to find out that the East coast was definitely for me and not the West.

Better to be sure before you make the big move.

Good luck.

Rachel :)

We too are going out without visiting first. We are a family of five and cant really afford to go travelling for six months ! ! !

By the time we get out there most of our family will be there anyway so what the hell. If its good enough for them, its good enough for us. Its a shame but this country is going to the dogs too!

I guess as everyone's suggested, if you can afford the time/money then do it, but I wouldn't let not visiting jeopardise an emigration. I would say, as folks like Rooksie have already, to *really* do your homework on your new home. There really is a huge difference between places like Perth and Brisbane or Gold Coast and Melbourne and it'd be sad to see your dream turn sour because you picked somewhere that doesn't fit with you and your family's way of life. Best of luck with the move. :)

Only you know what your likes/dislikes/priorities are so it is difficult to give advice on some of these things.. So I'd say definitely visit, yet also think about what season you are going to visit in.

Case in point is my brother who originally emigrated to Perth (having been there in the summer-ish season) then when he actually emigrated it was winter. After two weeks he found it not lively enough for his needs so he flew over to Sydney and realised that was the place for him and has been there ever since.

A slightly shortened version of the story, however hopefully it helps!

take care and good luck

If you go to OZ without visiting it first, make sure you see as much of OZ once you get there, don't just move to one place like Perth for example and not see the eastern states. Oz is a very large country with diverse landscapes and climates, many people love living in one state of city but hate another.

OH Heck, We leave on Tuesday morning after waiting 5 years to emmigrate, we have been sponsored by my employers and all have perm visa's however with 4 kids we have never even visited before having never had enough money to- I have nothing in my house, my emotions are battered - I know we could be making a very big mistake, but all that said, you only live once and even if you dont like it, it will probably be a fantastic experience good luck

Its an age old question on here. Not sure of the percentage of people who actually visit without seeing first, its probably fairly low. But nevertheless lots of people do it and are okay. Crazy? Yes, but if you want it why not? You only live once. After all we all go on holiday and love the place, be it Florida, Greece or Australia. Living in a new location is totally different from holidaying.

There is a lot of opinions on why you should or not necessarily so visit the place first, at the end of the day you are going to have to decide for yourselves. Whichever you do I am sure it will be the right choice. Good luck.

Us? we are going to Brisbane next July after our daughter finishes her GCSEs. Have we been before? Hell no. Just diving in at the deep end. Want a change and to experience a new culture. Bring it on. If its not us then we shall move back or move on.

Although I do sincerely advocate going to visit Australia at least once - thats not to say that there are people who cant for one reason or the other and its just not practical. To you, my sincere best wishes for your adventure and I hope that your dreams and hopes become reality, just keep the right attitude and all should be well :)

I have never been to oz in my life and neither had Hubby before he got his new job we are on our way as soon as house sale goes through. Hubby spent 7 weeks in Sydney in april and has been dying to get back ever since, we have a 21mth old son so that is the bit i am dreading most flying with a toddler is not something i am going to enjoy. Like you we were not in a position to do a reccie 1st luckily his 7 week trip was all expenses paid by the company as they were so short staffed he had to go and give them a hand (only possible because he is transferring from uk side of the company to the oz side) uk lent him to Oz and hubby got to see if he would like it.

You obviously don't have kids..
Personally I wouldn't entertain going anywhere without visiting first and that includes your kids, fair enough if they are babies (2 and under) but with such a big change in life kids MUST be involved too, if you involve them they will accept it much better..

Re: Should we visit first

VISIT first, no doubt about that but dont do it as a holiday, anyone can enjoy australia if they spend equiv of 3 months aussie wages in 2 weeks :D

Do schools, ignore the lovely uniforms what are they learning, go on a job hunt, price a a weeks grocieries, work out how many cars you will need and what it will cost to run them all. That sort of stuff.

If youve got 3 kids (like us) and self employed (like us) you must think about the costs involved going back to see your family will be similar to the reserach trip out here and many are saying they cant afford one.

And if your coming check out more than one state, the extra domestic fare will be well spent at least you can compare and dont base any decision on the weather at the time, think what its like at other times too! not just when you see it.

Stray off the tourist beat, of course the main tourist areas are lovely, see some real areas too, not so glitzy areas might give a better feel for real australia.
