I take it your thinking about emigrating? If so where ever you decide to go surly you must visit first to see if its the place for you.

Yes, I too would visit first just to see. A trip may not be the same as living there, but you could get an idea and a feel for the place. You could also go blindly and see what happens, but given your concern about finances - go and have a look, put your mind at rest. :)

You really should visit before you move. It is too much of a gamble not to!!

It's a long way to go to find out you don't like it!!

I know what you're concerns are, being self employed, at a guess you are looking at approx £3000 - £4000 + loss of earnings for this trip. Just imagine going through with your application (costing us £12000 in total to get to Oz)then getting there and not liking it. :(

Is it not possible to leave the kids with relatives whilst you go and have a look - it'll cut down on the expenses and put your mind at rest.

I understand the logic behind this but I for one could never make such a life changing decision without looking before I leap. Australia is a big country - I didnt like Perth and we've decided to settle in Brisbane for example. Just think its too much a huge decision personally to take such a leap of faith in what is a foreign country.

i hear exactly what youre saying and we have ummmed and ahhhhed until we have gone blue in the face but we have simply decided we are going to go for it. we have done the math and the difference at the end of the day isnt so great. nothing is set in stone - if we dont like it we come back. no biggie.

obviously we are all different people/families and lead different lives and have differnt opinions and outlooks on life. we are not the sanest or the most sensible by far but every crazy decision we have made has always been the right one. this is obviously the biggest risk to date but ive got no worries with what we are doing. i just hope i dont live to regret that statement!! :o

Honestly...I cant understand that somebody is going to live in a country half around the world without even seen it before :o isn't it a too big gamble??

I'm sure you won't regret it. "He who dares wins" etc etc.

PS: I used to live in Shiphay and later Ellacoombe.

Thanks all

Replying for spread40!

Basically the cost would be huge not only loss of earnings being self employed running small business would also lose work whilst being away!
This potentially could be losing up to 2 months wages!!
Then the flights accomodation and everything else really looking at around £15,0000 +, :scared:.
Which really could be put aside for returning if we hated it!!
I just answererd me own question I think!

Anyway just really wondered how many others were jumping in blind!!

Cheers

I would DEFINITELY say go and have a look first Spread!! We went 'in at the deep end' last year and going blind is so much harder. We came back (long story! :o ) and plan to return next summer :D but if there was just one thing I could have done differently last time it would have been to go and have a LONG holiday and do some research on the area that you plan to live in. We did loads and loads of research on the net ourselves but NOTHING can beat being there for real and living it. I know it is expensive to go on holiday and then return again to live. That is just what we were thinking and why we ending up going 'all or nothing' fashion. There are however loads of people on here who went blind and settled just fine. Whichever way you decide to go mate - Good Luck!! Trev. :)
