Should We Mine Antarctica?
Controversial senator Barnaby Joyce has suggested we begin exploiting Antarctica's mineral wealth, before someone else gets in there and does it.
He argues Australia could do it in an environmentally sensitive and sustainable way.
Australia claims 42 per cent of the Antarctic but that claim is not recognised by a lot of countries.
So, should we begin mining Antarctica British Expats? the coice is yours!

Having watched a recent programme about Antarctic i would be horrifed if mining took place i would say leave it for scientists and wildlife it looks truely breath taking and should remain so

Next week I'm flying North to the mines where it gets to 45c. What's the difference? working in the heat or the cold it's all uncomfortable isn't it.
The polititian may have a point "Use it Or lose it".
If we don't use it then maybe China will. I Know their scientists were sniffing around there last year.
Or yes and Mandy What terrible news about Sunderland being religated again eh.

Trouble with an environment like Antarctica is "use it AND loose it" . Same thing goes for tourism, it wouldnt take much to screw up the environment there.

Nobody has technology today to be able to mine in Antartica - to quote the sensible MP on the news ' it would be easier to mine ore from the moon '

And as for the chinese going in an wrecking the place, yeah for sure. Because they cant' do responsible things either, Fu-Manchu , the yellow peril , is back and he's after your antarcic ores. Whatch for next weeks installment , Did Sir Denis Nayland-Smith and Dr Petrie survive the train wreck caused by Fu-Manchu's evil agents? , will they beat him in the race to the antartic circle to foil his dastardly plots? The Madrid Protocol prohibits mining.
The Antarctic Treaty, 1961 prohibits dropping nuclear bombs.
Other peaceful purposes not prohibited.
