Default Short-term car insurance - UK

I just tried to get a quote for 23 days car insurance for a make believe Nissan Micra and it was £243 - is that pretty much the norm? (Just thinking ahead to when I go back to the UK in March...)

That's more than my insurance for the year here! and that's in dollars.

I hired a car when I went back, cost me £600(ish) for 15 days. Used these guys: http://www.enterprise.com/car_rental/home.do Got a lovely car, didn't want to give it back

So I was on the phone to my Dad tonight and he suggested that because we're insured with RACQ over here that RAC may be connected in some way?

Sometimes you can cut the cost of hire car insurance using this lot
http://www.insurance4carhire.com/
especially for longish hire periods.

Can you not just get a quote for annual insurance, pay monthly, then cancel the policy?

Cheers

to be fair, I'd just buy normal car insurance! I have no idea of your age and driving experience, but considering my sister is 29 and pays 300 for a YEAR, that's a 30-50 pound deposit / first payment and gets you a whole month of driving.

then cancel, pay the 10 pound cancellation fee and you've just saved a couple hundred and have a full month to drive...

20-30 pounds is about standard for temp cover, but I never quite understand why not just go for a proper insurance company, that will most likely be more helpful in event of a claim, cost next to nothing etc.. just need to find one with a reasonable deposit and cancelation charges and bob's your uncle's mother's cousin.

We are in the UK at the moment and tried to do that but because we have no address in the UK and do not have a UK driving licence, none of the insurance companies we called would not touch us.

My dad tried to put us on his insurance and found the same problem, but they said they would do it for a £350 premium, so just decided to hire a car for £287 for 21 days from Arnold Clark.
