We're also self-packing and we're going to be packing all material items (clothes, towels, sheets, etc.) into vaccuum storage bags. It saves a ton of space and will keep everything fresh and free from moisture, mildew, bugs, etc. So far, I've re-used the same bags we used from a previous move but I also just ordered another 20 of them on eBay for £30 (incl. shipping).

In our case, everything is being packed into sturdy plastic crates (with interlocking lids) instead of cardboard boxes. If you are going to use cardboard boxes, I'd recommend adding a layer of cardboard on top inside each box, so that there would be no damage to the contents if customs use anything sharp to break into the boxes. Failing that, go with boxes that have lids.

I've shopped around quite a bit on the internet & eBay for the best prices for all the thngs I've bought (crates, bubblewrap, corregated cardboard wrap, shrinkwrp rolls, brown tape, vacuum bags, removal blankets, etc.). Just Google what you're looking for and look at all the web-sites in turn until you find the cheapest. I'll try to dig out where I bought things and summarise here shortly.

How much you need depends on how much you are packing and the method you are going to be using. It really is a question of how long is a piece of string - no joke ;-)

I'd agree with using the silica gel sachets for moisture protection. I just paid £31.00 for a box of 100 of the 25g sized packets (including shipping and VAT). I'm planning on putting a single packet in each box and also with each matresse, sofa, etc.

I hadn't considered hanging the large ones inside the container itself but that certainly sounds like a very good idea. I've just checked and the 600g packets can be had for around £5 on eBay.

Hi Nevsy

I am using a company to ship my wordly goods. I have been advised not to take candles for two reasons:

Beewax is a possible issue for AQIS (quarantine people) (although my candles are all parafin wax)

The climatic changes the container will go through on its journey could well cause your candles to melt into a big mess. I guess that would depend a bit on how they were packed though.

I have decided not to take mine.
