in the container itself they are fine, the problem most reported is with customs on the other side. Stuff missing, broken etc. do a search on shipping threads and read what has happened or not to others and make up your own mind. Anything we are not willing to risk loosing/breaking will be going in our hand luggage with us, certain expensive tools. photos, jewelery etc. As for the table, if you can afford to risk it then ship it off.

the shippers packed everything real careful and not one item was broken
they made a purpose built crate for the plasma and wrapped every thing fragile in loads of cushioned paper

when it comes to customs,do they go inside and go through everything and move stuff etc,or do they just look at a list and if they feel something might be a problem check it out, anyone know about this.

Its just i have a very large collection of plaster, chalkware celeb, sports, president etc caricature statues i been collecting for years and was wondering if they would mess about with these, they are pretty fragile and really dont want to be handled too much, many are very rare and work out lots,i cant see me parting with collection before move so will probably take them with me,but there would be close to 200 of them, all about 18inch in size. Some i could easy make ££££ on to the right collectors, but as i like them and been collecting so long would find hard to part.
The all came from usa over the years now might be going to oz,would they be ok,i would prefer to pack these myself as i know how well they need to be packed.

The packers who packed us up say the first thing they do is check the inventory for suspicious sounding items like "garden furniture".

Then they'll open the container and let specialist dogs have a sniff.

If they get excited, so do the customs people, especially if you have not accurately listed your items.

They know if the dog sniffs soil for example, as it does certin things, same goes for alcohol, drugs, cane furniture, rattan, etc.

All our glass and fragile/precious items (such as original artworks, oil on canvass type) were packed into made to measure wooden crates. Same goes for the big plasma TV.

Our packers were A1 fantastic (Allied Pickfords) and were very, very careful with our stuff.

It helps if you meet and greet them in a friendly manner, provide lots of cups of tea/coffee and stacks of chocolate biscuits and sandwiches for lunch. We even got ours fish and chips for lunch one day and they had never been treated like that before they said, but they certainly looked after us for these reasonably small gestures.

They were the experts at packaging anything and everything and some of the mega expensive/valuable stuff one of them was telling me he had packed, it made our stuff seem like trash! One mansion took 6 weeks to pack up, filling 5 40 foot containers with, among other things, fine works of art worth over 50 million quid!

I do stained glass work and packed all my glass myself. Make sure it is wrapped securely in paper and then in a wooden crate which is fairly tight fitting to the contents so the glass isn't able to move around. Also make sure it stands on end in the carton and NEVER is allowed to lay flat. Try to pack other items around the crate in the carton so the crate is not able to move around as well.

I'm happy to say all of my glass made it to Adelaide safely and then again interstate from Adelaide to Perth. Not a single chip.
