In reply to Brian W.......We chose 6 shippers with good accreditation and then reduced this to 3 by reading their websites, looking at their locality and reading reviews.....they are coming to survey in the order that they are named my original post. We had already been given a ball park figure of £3.5-4k for sole use 20ft container which I believe holds around 1050 cu ft so we are expecting quotes around that figure. The first quote has come in at just over £5,800 for 892 cu ft with full packing and unpacking service - under a full container, but will require sole use.....got the other two surveys this week......watch this space!.....we may, if we go, be going with just our suitcases! I have read in expats that once the quotes are in you can sometimes negotiate a better price!
Jules

Let me know how you get on i have loads of stuff to take with me why do they alway mention cu ft surely they give you a price on a 20ft container add a little extra thats it,do the go on the amount of stuff i think most people would use the most of there container

Hi,
Am currently getting quotes for shipping from Surrey to Perth have booked surveys from the following agents: Bournes, PSS and John Masons. Would appreciate feedback from anyone who has had experience with these companies,Thanks .......

Hi,

We used Robinsons (UK) and upon arrival in Perth (W.A) Grace delivered our goods, both were great and have recommended them to others recently and all have had no problems. Good luck

Hi All,

Many thanks for all the replies so far.....some new names have come out of it which we will investigate, not least the insurance co LP - thought we had to go with the shipping co's insurance quote so thats helpful!
Have had 1 quote from Bournes - more expensive than the surveyors have initially told us by about 2k!..... almost £6000 for a full 20ft container, at that rate we'll be leaving everything behind! Have PSS and John Masons coming this week...will let you know!
As for the car - we have BMW and Volvo which apparently are classed as 'luxury' cars in Aus and we've heard that as well as shipping costs we may have to pay import taxes on them which will probably make it too costly to ship them - if you know otherwise let us know.
Thanks again for all responses...........
Jules:)

If I had a Volvo or BMW I would really consider shipping them. The luxury car tax is based on the value of the car not the type of car. Currently it kicks in if the car is worth more than $57,000. Value is based on purchase price converted to dollars or an alternative method based on market value in Australia estimated by an approved estimator. The second hand price of cars in Australia is very high. Even a second hand Alfa that is 8 years old will sell for $10k AUD when they are worth 2K GBP here. You may find your BMW and Volvo are worth in Australia about what you paid for them in the UK after having for 5 years. So it is possible to actually make some money out of this.
You need to pay customs duty at 5% of import value (import value is what you paid for the car unless it is really depreciated), then GST at 10% on the import value + shipping + insurance. Then once there you need to get Customs to inspect and clear, may need a steam clean, may need a professional valuation. You will probably need to have your unregistered car towed to the nearest motor registry where your car will be checked for compliance with Australian Design Rules. Your car may need to be modified - usually speedo changes to kilometres and child seat restraints fitted as Oz does not use the ISO system used in Europe. Registration costs $550 and is valid for one year. Shipping costs vary - PSS will do it in a sole container for 2K GBP if you do with other household goods.

Have a look at the price of cars in OZ on various car sales websites - try Sydney Morning Herald Classifieds online - http://www.carsales.com.au - Also check out http://www.anglopacific.co.uk/docume...g-cars-aus.pdf

when you look into these shippers and get quotes do they come from anywhere or are you best to get one that may have a depot near by,down the line i will be looking for someone and like everyone i will want a good company to do this but also the best price,is there a list of company's someone can list,is there a way of searching if any of these have a depot near by.
Do they normally only pack your stuff up from one location or can they take your stuff from another location as i might have stuff in another loction ie in storeage i i would need to take.

http://www.fidi.org/alliance/find-fi...faimiso=&name= is a list of all the FIDI accredited movers who have achieved the FAIM international moving quality standard in the UK. Some list multiple locations but some list just their head office so you may have to go to their individual website to see a list of their depots. For international moves most movers will be willing to travel to you so dont worry too much if your mover of choice is a bit further afield.

Most movers will be happy to pick up from as many locations as necessary, they may do this in their own vehicle separately and then load into a container all in one location all at once.

Hope that helps
