Shared Accommodation
Any experiences with shared accommodation? What is it like, what are the people like, generally, in those arrangements?
This seems a more interesting option for newcomers as it offers an opportunity to meet someone as opposed to being alone in a rented apartment. Any opinions, from both those who intend to go (primarily Melbourne area I'm thinking about) and those already there?

Re: Shared Accommodation
Hi guys!
When my brother arrived here, he didn't fancy a hostel so we looked in the local town hall on their notice board and there were lots of people advertising for a house shares.
He rang the house he was interested in, in the right location (In this instance, Fremantle, WA) and he went down to meet them and have a look around the house. It was great, nice people, in a great location - cheep too. There were others also considering the house too, so my brother was invited out (To the pub) with all the house mates, including those who were interested in moving in. The house mates chose my brother to move in with them and he's loving it.
It's luck of the draw who you live with, but on the flip side, if they are like minded people then it's a great opportunity to meet other Australians.
When I was in Australia travelling, my partner and I considered this an option having lived in a hostel. Hostels are also great to meet other travellers, but if you are moving out permanently then house shares are a good way to meet people who live in the area - who are going to be around for a while.
Look in the local papers, town halls, public notice boards, hostels for people letting out rooms.
Hope that helps.

Re: Shared Accommodation
The responses are better than I expected. Definitely sounds like a very good option for an initial period there. Meeting new people is probably the most important thing in a new place.
