Mel Gibson is an American, not an Aussie. Australia has a habit of claiming as its own anyone famous who has passed through its borders once in their life.
Best one was Tony Blair (spent a year here, had a piccy of him on a trike to prove it so there!)

Front page news too.

Mel Gibson moved here when he was about 10. Yes, there are a few famous Australians who weren't born here but came here as young children. JaneyRay & alot of others on this board moved from Australia to the UK when they were kids. Lets call them Australians & see what they think, shall we? I wonder what nationality Mel describes himself as? I think you will find its Australian.

God you people can talk a lot of old rot when you want to run down the Aussies

yeah, a bit disjointed, but you get that LOL. Not quite the fairytale you would tell to the kids though . I think Dagboy was relieved that my name seemed to appear in the title only .

'Although Gibson grew up in Australia, he was born in the United States and lived there until he was 12 when his father moved him and his nine siblings to Sydney.

The actor says he now feels as much American as he does Australian and likes to think that he is part of both countries.

"I don't think of myself as either American or Australian really, I'm a true hybrid. It's a good thing for me because both of them are really good countries," he says.'
